GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – All 10 Americans earned medals in the first day of the Cadet Pan American Championships in the Greco-Roman discipline in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The day was highlighted by five gold medals.
Winning gold for the U.S. in the opening day of competition was Sheldon Seymour at 48 kg, Hunter Lewis at 55 kg, Carson Manville at 65 kg, Gerrit Nijenhuis at 80 kg and Chase Thompson at 110 kg.
Manville, a double gold medalist at the 2017 Cadet Pan Ams, earned his third continental gold medal on Friday, outscoring his opponents 24-0 with three technical falls.
Also shutting out his opponents was Lewis, who had four dominating tech fall wins to stand atop the podium at 55 kg. Lewis improved on his 2017 finish, where he earned silvers in both Greco and freestyle.
A 2017 Fargo All-American, Nijenhuis collected four wins, including two pins and two tech falls. His two falls came at 30 seconds and 31 seconds, respectively, while both of his tech falls were 11-1 wins.
At 110 kg, Thompson put together a solid day, tallying a tech fall, pin and decision en route to his first international medal.
With only two people registered at 48 kg, Seymour only had to wrestle one match for the gold. Against Pablo Tacam Cua of Guatemala, Seymour posted a second-period fall in 3:19.
Silver medals came from Paxton Creese at 51 kg, Beau Bartlett at 60 kg and Aaron Gandara at 71 kg, while bronzes were won by Stevo Poulin at 45 kg and Santos Cantu at 92 kg.
All 10 U.S. Greco representatives will wrestle again on Sunday in men’s freestyle competition.
The Cadet Pan Am Championships continue on Saturday with women’s freestyle action. Live video and brackets are available on Trackwrestling.com.
