CLEVELAND – On a day that started with upsets coming fast and furious, top-ranked Wartburg escaped most of the mayhem and put itself in good position to win the 14th national title in program history.
Seven Wartburg wrestlers advanced to Saturday's semifinals as the Knights scored 76.5 points to build a 32-point lead over rival Augsburg at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Cleveland Public Auditorium.
“I thought some of the guys wrestled a little tight, but I'm proud of those guys,” Wartburg Coach Eric Keller said.
For the most part, the Knights avoided the upsets that struck just about every other team.
“Their sights are set really high,” Keller said of the Knights, who are attempting to win their seventh national title in the past eight years. “They're not satisfied by any shape or form.”
Wartburg entered the tournament with five top seeds, one second and two thirds, and only one of those was derailed Friday.
Freshman Mike Ross suffered his first loss of the season when he injury defaulted to Ithaca's Nick Velez at 165 pounds in a match he was losing 12-3. Velez had a lot of incentive win anyway. He had given Ross one of his closest matches all year, losing 4-2 at the National Duals when Ross scored back points late in the match.
Ross came back to win his wrestleback and also will finish the season as an All-American.
“We've got an unbelievable trainer (Ryan Callahan), and he did a lot of work with him,” Keller said, adding that he didn't know the extent of Ross's injury. “His goal was to win a national championship, but he still had the opportunity to be a four-time All-American, and that starts with his next match.”
The Knights' list of semifinalists includes defending national champion Eric Devos at 174 pounds and returning national runners-up Cross Cannone (149) and Logan Thomsen (157). Top seeds Kyle Fank (197) and Lance Evans (heavyweight) also advanced, as did third seeds Brock Rathbun (133) and Tyler Lutes (184).
While Wartburg avoided upsets for the most part, many seeds were not immune. The only weight in which all eight seeds will finish as All-Americans is 184.
While every top seed will earn All-America honors, three of them will have to do it on the backside of the draw.
Two top seeds were knocked off before the tournament was even a half-hour-old Friday morning, and many more followed suit.
No time was wasted for the first upset. In Match No. 1, Ithaca’s Ferdinand Mase tied the match used 1 minute, 1 second of riding time to knock off former national runner-up CJ Pestano of Central College 6-5 at 125 pounds.
Moments later the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds at 133 lost, Troy Stanich of Stevens losing 10-2 to unseeded Joao Vicente of Johnson & Wales and Wabash’s Owen Doster getting pinned by Hunter Harris of Messiah.
Also falling in the first round was second-seeded Jimmy Davis of Loras at 149. He lost 18-2 to NYU’s Evan Drill in a match that lasted just 2:47.
Vicente was one of two unseeded wrestlers to reach the semifinals, along with Alma’s Brendan Ladd at 141.
The semifinals at 125 will feature eighth seed Nick Mancini of Mount Union against No. 5 seed Carlos Fuentez of Wheaton.
Vicente will face fourth-seeded Sam Bennyhoff of Augsburg in one 133 semifinal, with Rathbun facing No. 7 seed Austin Sisco of Oneonta State in the other.
At 141, top seed Brett Kaliner of Stevens will battle No. 5 Joseph Ghione of Elizabethtown, and Ladd will meet No. 7 Ben Brisman of Ithaca.
Cannone will take on No. 5 seed Alex Wilson of Augsburg at 141, while third seed Gregory Warner of York will meet No. 7 Sean Peacock of Brockport in the other semifinal.
The semifinals at 157 almost went as seeded, with Augsburg’s Ryan Epps taking on fifth seed Cole Erickson of Coe and Thomsen going against No. 3 seed Zach Wilhelm of Stevens.
The situation is the same at 174, with Devos and No. 5 Jon Goetz of Wisconsin-Platteville squaring off, while No. 3 Ben Swarr gets No. 2 Jairod James of Mount Union.
There also is a 2-3 battle at 165, with Lucas Jeske of Augsburg meeting No. 3 Anthony Arroyo of Baldwin Wallace, but in the other half it’s the eighth-seeded Velez against No. Frank Aiello of Wheaton.
There’s another 1 vs. 5 match at 184 with defending champion Jordan Newman of Wisconsin-Whitewater facing Christos Giatras of Augustana. In the bottom half, Lutes will face No. 7, John Boyle of Western New England.
Fank will take on No. 4 Etiini Udott of Centenary at 197, and No. 2 Guy Patron of Loras will face No. 6 Triston Engle of Brockport State.
Heavyweight also almost went to the seeding. Top seed Evans will face fifth-seeded Jake Evans of Waynesburg in one match, and No. 2 James Bethel of Oneonta State gets No. 3 Jake O’Brien of Ithaca in the other.
