Apprentice School up 1.5 points on Liberty after semifinal round at NCWA Nationals

ALLEN, Texas – The team race is very close after day two of the NCWA Nationals on Friday, as the Apprentice School slipped into the lead, just 1.5 points ahead of Liberty, which held the lead over the first three sessions.
The Apprentice School pushed three into the championship finals, with No. 2 Colton Messick (125), No. 1 Chad Simmons (157) and No. 2 Ross Graham (197) winning in the semifinals. Three other team members are in the consolation rounds.
Liberty only qualified one person for the finals, No. 1 Austin Amos (235), but has eight other wrestlers in the wrestle-backs. Central Florida is in third place with no finalists, but 10 athletes in the consolation rounds.
Only one returning champion reached the finals, No. 2 seed Stevan Webb of UConn at 235. The other returning champion, Justice Griffith of Central Florida, was defeated in the 133-pound semifinals by No. 1 seed Arthur Payne of Mott CC.
A pair of No. 1 seeds lost in their semifinals. At 149 pounds, unseeded Ty'rae Carter of Texas A&M beat No. 1 seed Jay Sheppard of Emmanuel, 4-3. At 285 pounds, No. 4 seed Nathan Spinetti of Penn State – Fayette beat top-seed Jesse Gaudin of Central Florida, 8-3.
In the women’s bracket, Southwestern Oregon is running away with the tournament with an impressive 120 points, way ahead of second place Maine with 47 points.
The semifinals featured a matchup of returning champions, as Marina Goocher of Michigan-Dearborn scored a 13-1 major decision over Avery Souders of North Texas. Goocher was the 136-pound champ last year, and Souders won it at 130 pounds last year.
