FARGO, N.D. – Last week, Nebraska star Jakason Burks was over in Zagreb, Croatia, competing in Greco-Roman at the UWW Cadet World Championships for Team USA. Tonight, he is a Cadet Nationals freestyle champion, and will be going home to Omaha with the Outstanding Wrestler trophy.
Burks popped a big five-point back arch throw and finished off a strong performance with a 10-0 technical fall over Daniel Cardenas of Colorado in 3:23. Burks was a Cadet Nationals All-American in both styles last year, but his highest placement had been fifth in Greco-Roman.
“I’m very excited. I just came back from Worlds, and I didn’t do as good as I wanted to and I proved that here. Everyone thinks I’m only good at one style, but no, I prove it in every style,” he said.
Four wrestlers came into the finals with hopes for a coveted Cadet Triple Crown still possible. Only three will be entering the Cadet freestyle tournament with that dream still going: Mason Gehloff of Minnesota at 88 pounds, Maxximus Martinez of Califnornia at 94 pounds, Jordan Williams of Oklahoma at 94 pounds. They were Cadet Folkstyle National champions in Iowa in April, and won their finals bout today.
All three won decisions over their opponents. Gehloff stopped Minnesota teammate Jore Volk 8-1 in the finals. Martinez was solid in a 6-2 win over Carter Fousek of Iowa. Williams won a very competitive match, hitting a sweet duck under takedown in the final 30 seconds to break a tie and edge Alex Almeyda of New Jersey, 6-4.
Martinez has seen growth since losing earlier in the season at the UWW Cadet World Team Trials. He got some insight from NCAA champion and Final X runner-up Zahid Valencia of Arizona State.
“[Zahid Valencia] did talk to me about my UWW loss. He said, ‘I saw your match. You didn’t let it fly.’ And I didn’t. I held back, and he told me, ‘Next time you just go out there and wrestle and have fun. Have fun. Use the crowd to pump you up.’ And that’s what I did and I love the crowd and wrestled. I just wrestled this time,” said Martinez.
The Triple Crown contender who did not win was 2018 Cadet Folkstyle Nationals champion Chris Island of California, who was thrown and pinned in the 220-pound finals by new national champion Nathaniel Deasey of Arizona.
Returning Cadet National double champion Carson Manville of Pennsylvania won his third career Cadet title with a 16-4 technical fall over John Martin Best of West Virginia at 145 pounds. Best opened with a four-point throw, but Manville powered back with multiple takedowns and turns. Manville recently wrestled at the UWW Cadet World Championships, placing eighth in freestyle.
Pennsylvania won the team title with two champions and 14 All-Americans, amassing 72 points. Ohio was second with 51 points and Minnesota was third with 47 points.
After placing second in last year’s Cadet Freestyle Nationals, Dominick Serrano of Colorado won the national title this year, controlling Michael Burnett of Ohio, 5-1 at 126 pounds.
At 132 pounds, talented Joshua Edmond of Michigan defeated 2017 Cadet National freestyle runner-up Ryan Franco of California, 10-5, giving Franco a second Cadet freestyle silver medal. Edmond popped a four-point body lock throw early in the second period to stretch his lead to 8-2.
One of the most entertaining finals bouts was at 106, where Nicolar Rivera of Wisconsin edged 2017 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion Yusief Lillie of Washington, 12-11. Trailing late in the match, Rivera hit a four-point hip toss for the move that gave him the big win.
There were seven technical falls in the finals. In addition to the technical falls from Burks and Manville, others who were able to get technical fall stoppages in the finals were Travis Mastrogiovanni of New Jersey at 138,
Tate Picklo of Oklahoma at 152, Quayin Short of Minnesota at 160, Luke Stout of Pennsylvania at 170 and Hayden Copass of Illinois at 285.
Mastrogiovanni beat Luke Geog of Ohio, 10-0. Picklo also had a 10-0 technical fall over Manuel Rojas of Michigan. Short stopped Connor O’Neil of New Jersey, 10-0. Stout was a 12-2 winner over Sam Skillings of Wisconsin. Closing out the meet with a 10-0 technical fall at heavyweight was Copass over Colby Whitehill of Pennsylvania.
Scoring victories by decision in the finals to bring home a stop sign trophy were Jesse Ybarra of Arizona at 120 pounds, Rocky Elam of Missouri at 182 pounds and Noah Pettigrew of Georgia at 195 pounds.
