FARGO, N.D. – A week ago, they were in Zagreb, Croatia, representing Team USA at the UWW Cadet World Championships. On Sunday, they will be in the finals of the women’s division of the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet National Champions at the Fargodome.
2018 Cadet World Team members in the Cadet finals include Sterling Dias of Nevada (94), Cheyenne Bowman of California (132) and Tristan Kelly of Colorado (184).
Dias won a bronze medal at 40 kg/88 lbs. in Zagreb, and has powered her way to the finals here in Fargo at 94 pounds. Dias jumped to a 6-0 lead over New York’s Abbygale Duke on a takedown and two gut wrenches. An action went out of bounds, and officials gave Duke four points, but a challenge changed that call to four for Dias for a 10-0 technical fall. She will battle Ava Bayless of Pennsylvania, who pinned Melissa F. Lee of California in 3:44 in her semifinal.
Bowman did not wrestle in Zagreb after missing weight at 57 kg/125 lbs. Here in Fargo, she is a Cadet Nationals finalist at 132 pounds. Bowman needed only 26 seconds to pin Hannah Strauss of Illinois in her semifinal bout. Her finals opponent, Lily Sherer of Pennsylvania, had an even quicker semifinal pin, stopping Nallely Rivadeneira of California in 16 seconds. Bowman was ranked No. 3 nationally coming into Fargo, and Sherer is unranked.
Kelly, the UWW Cadet team member at 73 kg/161 lbs., reached the finals with an 8-1 win over New York’s Sariah Stewart. She draws 2018 Cadet Folkstyle National champion Katja Osteen of California in the finals, who pinned Katie Moore of New York in 26 seconds in the other half-bracket. Kelly is ranked No. 2 in the current girls high school national rankings, while Osteen is next with a No. 3 national ranking.
Among the finalists are six 2018 Cadet Folkstyle National champions, who are looking to win a double title on the Cadet level this year. They include Camille Fournier of Texas at 112, Mia Macaluso of New York at 127, Kiley Hubby of Washington at 152, Katja Osteen of California at 164, Adelina Parra of California at 180 and Olivia Brown of Oklahoma at 200.
To show how tough the Cadet Nationals are this year, there were six returning Cadet Nationals finalists who competed on Saturday, two national champions and four national runners-up. None of last year’s finalists were able to qualify for the finals this year.
Another indication of tournament strength is the fact that 13 different states are represented in the gold-medal finals. The state with the most Cadet women finalists is Illinois with five.
Joining Fournier, Macaluso, and Kelly as returning Cadet All-Americans in the finals are Alejandra Corral of Hawaii (100), Samara Chavez of Texas (106), Nevaeh Cassidy of Washington at 144, Jaycee Foeller of Missouri and Isabeau Shalack of Illinois (200).
The championship finals of the Cadet Women’s Nationals are on Sunday, beginning at 1:30 p.m., live on FloWrestling.
