BURNABY, B.C., Canada – Top-ranked Simon Fraser University defeated No. 8 Grays Harbor College, 24-18, on Friday night in West Gym in Burnaby, B.C., Canada, on Senior Night. It was SFU’s first home dual in several years.

SFU is now 2-0 on the year against GHC as the Clan won the first matchup in December, 31-15.

After giving up five points to Grays Harbor on a forfeit at 101 pounds, Simon Fraser was on the board with a decision at 109 from Alexia Seal, who knocked off No. 8 Kateri Rowell with a 12-11 win, thanks to a pair of feet-to-back takedowns.

Sixth-ranked Lauren Mason of SFU picked up bonus points at 116 pounds with a fast 10-0 technical fall over Angelita Sanchez of Grays Harbor.

Bumping up to 123 pounds was SFU’s Abby Lloyd, the WCWA’s top-ranked wrestler at 116 pounds. A front-headlock in the first period from Lloyd put Grays Harbor’s Brittany Wynn on her back for an SFU fall.

2017 U.S. U23 World Team member, Dominique Parrish, who is No. 1 at 123 pounds, stepped in for SFU at 130 pounds. A 2017 WCWA runner-up, Parrish put on a takedown clinic against Carla Sanchez of GHC for a first-period tech fall.

Grays Harbor slowed down the Clan’s momentum at 136 pounds, when 2017 All-American and No. 4 Desiree Zavala teched the league’s second-ranked wrestler and 2017 WCWA runner-up Nicole Depa. Zavala trailed, 6-0, early in the bout but stormed back for a 17-7 win.

GHC forfeited at 143 pounds, giving SFU five team points.

U.S. World Team member and two-time WCWA champion Mallory Velte of SFU dominated, bumping up to 155 pounds and recording a fall in the first minute of the bout against Veronica Coppolino.

To last two matches went to the Lady Chokers.

At 170 pounds, 2017 All-American and fourth-ranked Kacie Moorhouse fell behind early but racked up big points for GHC with a fall over Rebekah Trudel.

The 191-pound finale was a 1 vs. 2 battle and a rematch of the 2017 WCWA finals. Returning champ Payten Smith of Simon Fraser faced off against 2017 runner-up Paige Baynes of Grays Harbor. Smith went up 4-0 with a throw to put Baynes on her back. The Choker responded, wrapping up the period with an 8-4 lead. Baynes went on to win 9-5.

Simon Fraser will be back in action on Jan. 28 at the Cascades Classic in Abbotsford, B.C., Canada, while Grays Harbor will wrestle Eastern Oregon on Jan. 27 in LaGrande, Ore.
