In the battle of the top two ranked teams at the South Beach Duals, No. 6 Missouri defeated No. 9 Cornell, 22-9, in the fourth round of action, and finished the event with a perfect 4-0 record. Cornell won two of the first three bouts, but the Tigers then ran off six straight wins to put away the dual meet.
Also finishing with a perfect 4-0 record for the competition was No. 9 Minnesota, which secured a pair of wins on Sunday, beating Kent State, 51-0 and then No. 22 Utah Valley, 36-6. Against Kent State, the Gophers scored bonus point victories in nine of the 10 matches. Against Utah Valley, Minnesota won the first five matches and went on to claim eight of the 10 victories.
Round Three on Sunday morning went as expected, based upon rankings, except for West Virginia’s 19-17 upset of North Dakota State. West Virginia gave up two forfeits, but was able to win based upon winning six of the eight contested matches, including the last two bouts of the dual meet.
Also in Round Three, No. 12 North Carolina, which went 0-2 on Saturday, rebounded to defeat No. 21 Lehigh, 22-18, giving Lehigh its third straight loss of the weekend. UNC won the first five bouts and Lehigh won the last five bouts, with bonus points the difference, as Lehigh lost two bouts by injury default, as Luke Karam (141) and Josh Humphreys (157) could not finish their bouts.
Round Four was highlighted when No. 12 North Carolina needed criteria to break a tie with No. 20 North Dakota State, 20-19. Going into heavyweight, the Bison led the Tarheels by three points, but Cory Daniel won an overtime match over Brandon Metz to end the dual with a 19-19 draw. North Carolina won the dual by having the most pins, with one, by Austin O’Connor at 149 pounds.
Three teams finished with 3-1 records: No. 7 NC State, No. 18 Wyoming and Virginia.
No. 20 North Dakota State missed Saturday’s duals due to weather-related travel delays, and had three dual meets on Sunday, going 1-2 on the day.
