Three wrestlers from Rutgers and three from Lehigh among champs at 86th annual Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes Open, named "The Rose Bowl of Wrestling," and one of the most historic holiday wrestling events in the nation, celebrated its 86th edition on Saturday.
A team of unattached wrestlers from Rutgers scored the most points in the tournament, led by three individual champions, Brett Donner (165) Matt Correnti (197) and Christian Colucci (285).
Correnti rattled off four wins en route to a championship at 197 pounds. In the title match against Kyle Gentile of Lehigh, Correnti used a takedown in the final minute of the third period to secure the 5-3 decision.
Colucci went 4-0, including a 3-0 decision over Niko Camacho (American), to advance to the heavyweight final, where he claimed a medical forfeit over teammate Kyle Lighter went 3-0 on his side of the bracket, including an impressive first-period pin of Victor Lacombe (Lehigh) in the semifinal to also secure his spot in the title match.
Donner won five times, two by medical forfeit, including a medical forfeit in the finals over Lehigh's Gordon Wolf.
Three wrestlers from Lehigh also came home with gold medals. Competing for Lehigh and winning titles were Luke Karam (141) and Ryan Preisch (184). Lehigh wrestler Cort Schulyer, wrestling unattached at 149 pounds, also claimed a gold medal.
Karam and Preisch returned to action for the first time since the Nov. 11 Journeymen Collegiate Classic, while Schuyler made his season debut. Schuyler and Preisch bested Lehigh teammates in their finals bouts.
Karam rolled through the 141-pound bracket, going 6-0 with five falls to claim the title. Karam’s fastest fall was a 1:13 pin over Kyle Medrow of Wilkes in the quarterfinals. In the finals, Karam bested Patrick Quinlan of Franklin & Marshall 9-3.
Preisch, who won his first four bouts on the day, with two falls, before facing sophomore Chris Weiler in the finals. Preisch claimed a 7-0 decision over Weiler, who competed down at 184 for the first time since his deferred season, to win the title at 184.
Schuyler’s debut action for the season featured three wins by technical fall before defeating teammate Jimmy Hoffman 7-4 in the finals at 149.
The wrestlers competing unattached from Lehigh placed second in the standings, while the wrestlers reprenting Lehigh placed third in the standings.
A total of 39 teams, some competing unattached, were included in this year's tournament, held at the Marts Center at Wilkes University.
Other individual champions were Jakob Campbell of unattached-Bucknell (125), Ramazan Attasaouv of Wyoming Seminary (133), Kizhan Clark of American (157) and Michael O'Malley of unattached-Drexel (174).
