Green, Kindig and Nelson to battle for medals at Alans International in Russia
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia – Three American freestylers will battle for medals on Sunday at the Alans International in Vladikavkaz, Russia.
Two-time World medalist James Green advanced to the semifinals at 70 kg before falling to two-time age-group World champion and 2018 U23 World silver medalist David Baev of Russia in a tight 8-6 bout.
Tomorrow, Green will wrestle for bronze. His opponent is to be determined. However, it’s possible that Green could face off against U.S. teammate Josh Kindig, who lost to Baev in the first round.
At 125 kg, Tony Nelson, a two-time National Team member, won two matches to advance to the semis. Just shy of guaranteeing himself a medal, Nelson dropped a 10-0 match to highly credentialed Geno Petriashvili of Georgia, who is a 2018 Senior World champion, 2017 U23 World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist.
Similar to Green, Nelson’s bronze-medal match opponent will be determined in tomorrow’s repechage.
