Corbett and Walker set for bronze medal matches at Cadet World Championships
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
ATHENS, Greece – 2017 Cadet Pan American champion Caitlyn Walker moved on to 40 kg/88 lbs. bronze-medal bout of the 2017 Cadet World Championships in Athens, Greece, on Friday morning.
Walker joins Kelani Corbett, who advanced to the 70 kg/154 lbs. bronze match last night, after falling short in the semifinals.
After losing her tournament opener to Sakurai Hanano of Japan, Walker was pulled back into the repechage when her Japanese opponent advanced to the finals at 40 kg last night.
Walker faced Regina Miller of Russia in her first repechage match on Friday morning. In the first half of the match, Walker drew a passivity point just one second before scoring a takedown on the Russian for a 3-0 lead at the break. Miller snagged two takedowns for a late lead. With less than 10 seconds left in the match, Walker scored two on headlock exposure to seal a 5-4 win and secure a spot in the bronze-medal bout.
There she will face Simran Simran of India, who was the 2016 Cadet Asian champion and 2017 Cadet Asian runner-up.
Corbett has 2017 European bronze medalist Bernadett Nagy of Hungary, who advances to the Cadet World bronze match for the second-consecutive year.
At 46 kg/101 lbs. Olivia Shore was unable to qualify for the medal rounds, dropping her repechage match to Jekaterina Jermalonoka of Latvia in a first-period pin. Shore led, 8-6, at the time of the fall, which came just one second before the buzzer.
Shore takes 14th at her first Cadet World Championships.
The men’s freestyle semifinals will begin at 5:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET), with the medal matches from women’s competition set for 6 p.m. (11 a.m. ET). Fans can find live streams and brackets on Trackwrestling.com.
