California Baptist Tabbed as Preseason Favorite in 2017-18 #RMACwrestle Coaches Poll
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – California Baptist was tabbed as the favorite to win the conference championship in the 2017-18 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Wrestling Preseason Coaches Poll released on Monday.
The preseason coaches poll was voted on by the nine head coaches in the RMAC. Eight points were awarded for a first-place vote; seven for second place, continuing in descending order. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
California Baptist earned 63 points, including seven first-place votes. The Lancers will enter the 2017-18 season after finishing last campaign as RMAC runners-up, NCAA Division II Super Region IV Tournament Champions, and qualifying seven wrestlers for the National Championships. Three of the seven earned NCAA DII All-American honors, which includes two returning grapplers, Nick Fiegener and Nolan Kistler. Head coach Lennie Zalesky was named 2016-17 DII Coach of the Year and will look to lead his team to a successful, final season as a NCAA DII member. The Lancers will transition to Division I at the end of the academic year.
CSU-Pueblo finished second with 54 points and one first-place vote. The ThunderWolves captured the 2017 RMAC Championship title with 16 points separating them from the runners-up. The Pack’s head coach Dax Charles was named RMAC Coach of the Year and guided three wrestlers to NCAA DII All-American honors.
Colorado Mesa placed third in the poll garnering the final first-place votes and 50 points. The Mavericks were fourth at the RMAC Championship and finished 30th overall at the NCAA Championships.
Western comes in fourth with 44 points. Chadron State was voted fifth, tallying 36 points. Adams State (28 points), Colorado School of Mines (22 points), San Francisco State (18 points) and New Mexico Highlands (nine points) rounds out the preseason coaches poll earning sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively.

The preseason All-RMAC team was voted on by the conference’s nine head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Fiegener, a redshirt junior, finished last season with a 35-3 record at 184-pounds. He was crowned RMAC Champion, regional champion and was the NCAA Division II Runner-Up at 184. The Folsom, California native won eight matches by decision, six by majority, pinned six and tallied 14 technical falls. Fiegener will continue his collegiate career at 184 for the 2017-18 season, looking to defend his conference and regional title and become a National Champion.

Last campaign, Fiegener finished the season 35-3 at 184 and posted 79 dual points with an undefeated 17-0 dual record. The Folsom, California native won eight matches by decision, six by majority, posted six pins and 14 technical falls. He was named RMAC Champion at 184 before becoming a regional champion and receiving NCAA Division II All-American honors at Nationals.
The preseason team consists of four student-athletes who earned All-RMAC First Team honors in 2016-17. California Baptist, Adams State, and CSU-Pueblo each have three wrestlers earning preseason recognition. Colorado Mesa has one student-athlete who landed on the list.
Teams will begin the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 4.
The 2018 RMAC Wrestling Championship will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Feb. 3.
