WIN releases first regular season Div. I TPI and individual rankings

by WIN Magazine

NEWTON, Iowa — The 2017-18 NCAA Division I season officially began last weekend and many of the top-ranked teams and individuals remain the same in WIN’s Nov. 13, 2017 Tournament Power Index and Individual Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Penn State, which has won six of the last seven NCAA championships, remained No. 1 with 116.5 TPI points. WIN ranks eight Nittany Lions in this first regular-season ranking, including four No. 1-ranked wrestlers — Zain Retherford (149 pounds), Jason Nolf (157), Vincenzo Joseph (165) and Bo Nickal (184).

Big Ten Conference rivals Ohio State and Michigan are rated second and third in this week’s TPI. The Buckeyes, with 110 TPI points, feature a wrestler at all ten weights and three wrestlers — Nathan Tomasello (125), Kollin Moore (197) and heavyweight Kyle Snyder — rated No. 1.

Michigan, which saw all seven ranked wrestlers rated in the Top 8 of their weight class, claims third place with 89.5 points; just eight points ahead of Oklahoma State (81.5) that features six Top-8-ranked wrestlers, including defending champ Dean Heil (141 pounds).

WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) predicts how many points each team will score and how many All-American each school will produce — based on current individual rankings — in the 2018 NCAA Championships this March.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.

The only changes among top-ranked wrestlers, compared to WIN’s preseason rankings that WIN announced in September, came at 125 and 174 pounds after defending national champs — Lehigh’s Darian Cruz at 125 and Penn State’s Mark Hall at 174 — lost bouts at the Nov. 5 NWCA All-Star Classic. Ohio State’s Tomasello and Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia are rated No. 1 at those weights.

The other top-ranked wrestlers is South Dakota State’s Seth Gross (133).

WIN will announce it’s first dual team rankings on Dec. 4.
