USA wins five medals at Yoshida Cup in Japan, led by golds from Liles and Welker

A team of U.S. Schoolgirl and Cadet age women wrestlers competed in the Saori Yoshida Cup in Japan today, harvesting five medals including two individual champions.
Capturing titles for the USA were Cadet wrestler Alex Liles of Allen, Texas at 60 kg and Schoolgirl wrestler Kylie Welker of Franksville, Wis. at 50 kg.
Liles, a past U.S. Cadet World Team member and multiple age-group national champion, was dominant in the competition, scoring four victorties including a pin, a technical fall and two decisions. She scored an 8-2 win in the finals against an opponent from Mongolia. Among her victories was against Cadet World silver medalist Sena Nagamoto of Japan, 4-0.
Welker also won four times, defeating a Mongolian opponent by technical fall, then stopping three different Japanese opponents. Her tally including a pin, two technical falls and an 8-0 victory, without giving up points to her opponents.
Michaela Beck of New York, N.Y. won a Cadet silver medal at 57 kg, going two for three on the day. She beat a Canadian by technical fall, 10-0, and a Japanese opponent, 8-0, to qualify for the finals, where she fell to a Japanese opponent, 7-0.
Adding bronze medals were Schoolgirl wrestler Virginia Foard of Reva, Va. and Cadet wrestler Alexis Gomez of Carol Stream, Ill.
A delegation of top U.S. Cadet and Schoolgirl wrestlers, including many nationally ranked athletes and previous U.S. National Team members, are in Japan for training and competition. The team is led by USA Wrestling Assistant National Coaches Emma Randall and Clarissa Chun. Minnesota coach Chad Shilson is also among the coaches there.
