by University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois wrestler Isaiah Martinez is set to compete in this weekend's Last Chance Trials Qualifier in Rochester, Minnesota with aims of advancing to the 2017 Men's Freestyle World Team Trials next month in Lincoln, Nebraska. Held Saturday and Sunday, Martinez's 74kg weight division will begin competition Sunday at 9 a.m. central time with a live stream available through subscription on FloWrestling.
The Last Chance Trials Qualifier will determine the final spot in each of the eight weight classes for U.S. World Team Trials on June 9-10 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The highest finisher at the Last Chance Trials Qualifier who has not yet qualified will receive the final bid.
After wrestling at 70kg at the Bill Farrell World Team Trials in New York last November, Martinez will move up to 74kg this weekend in Rochester. Along with Martinez, Dan Vallimont, Logan Massa, Matt Brown, Vlad Dombrovskiy, Quinton Godley and Mike Moreno will be among the top wrestlers vying for the final spot at 74kg. Martinez defeated Massa, a redshirt freshman at Michigan, twice last year including a 10-4 decision to win the 2017 Big Ten 165-pound title.
Martinez is 98-2 all-time at Illinois with two national championships and three Big Ten titles. His .980 career win percentage is the best in Illinois history, while his win total ranks 25th on the Illinois all-time list.
