Who is the toughest and most versatile Masters wrestler in the United States?

USA Wrestling has started a new Masters Ironman and Ironwoman Standings, which includes results from all of the national tournaments for Masters wrestlers in 2017.

Masters wrestlers have the opportunity to compete in five different styles this year. So far, the Masters national events in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle have been held.

There are two more USA Wrestling national events which host a Masters division, the U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, N.C. on May 20, and the U.S. Masters Grappling Nationals in Fresno, Calif., June 2-4 in Fresno, Calif.

Here is how the standings are compiled. Champions get 10 points, Second Place gets 7 points, Third Place gets 4 points and Fourth Place gets 1 point.

All five of the Veterans National Tournaments receive the same point scoring. It also does not matter how many entries there are in a weight class, so first place is still worth 10 points if there is one athlete, or if there is 10 athletes in the weight.

Leading the Masters Ironman standings after the first three national tournamets is Joe Raia of the Chicago Wrestling Club with 27 points. Raia won Masters National titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle, and was second in folkstyle, competing in Division C.

Two athletes follow with 24 points, Rudy James of the Apple Valley WC and Octavius Bellamy of the Chicago Wrestling Club. James was a Masters freestyle champion and placed second in folkstyle and Greco-Roman, competing in Division B. Bellamy was a Masters folkstyle champion and placed second in Greco-Roman and freestyle, competing in Division B.

Next are 18 wrestlers who have each won two national titles this year. Of this group, 17 were winners in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in Las Vegas. One athlete, Jeff Anderson in Division C, won his national titles in folkstyle and freestyle.

One more Masters Ironman/woman standings will be published after the conclusion of the last Masters nationals event, the Masters Grappling Nationals in Fresno, Calif.

Note: Any athlete who finds an error in these standings should contact Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling at gabbott@usawrestling.org
