Western Junior Regionals to feature top high school stars in Las Vegas, April 25-27

The 2017 Open Wrestling Championships is slated to take place April 25-29 at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. This event, billed as “All Ages, All Styles,” offers competitions in men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman over the course of the weekend, along with folkstyle for youth wrestlers.
The Western Junior Regionals will run as one of the Open Wrestling Championships events and will take place April 25-27.
Some of the country's best wrestlers in grades 9-12 will have a chance to compete in the Western Junior Regionals.
The Western Junior Regionals offers an opportunity to compete in various styles of wrestling; men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Athletes who place at this event have often been successful later in the summer at the Junior and Cadet National Championships.
One of the 2016 Western Junior Freestyle Champions eligible to return this year is two-time Cadet World Champion Gable Steveson (Minnesota Elite) at 220 pounds.
Also eligible to return and in quest to gain his third-straight Western Junior Freestyle title and second Western Junior Greco-Roman title is Brock Hardy (Stinger WC) at 138 pounds. In 2016 Hardy won double titles winning both Greco-Roman and Freestyle.
Another 2016 double title wrestler eligible to return this year is Jerry Mealey (Cobra All Stars) at 132 pounds.
Eligible to return in search of his third-straight Western Junior Greco-Roman title is Chad Porter (TWC/Arizona WC) at 220 pounds.
With prospect of a Western Junior Regional double title this year after losing grasp of it in last the finals of the Greco-Roman style is Quentin Hovis (Arizona) at 152 pounds.
Eligible to return for this years Women’s Freestyle competition is 2014 Cadet World Team member and two-time Western Junior champion is Hailey Cox (Champions WC) at 130 pounds.
Canada Cadet World Team member and defending Western Junior (High School) Women’s Freestyle champion Alexia Seal (105 pounds/Coast Wrestling) is eligible to return.
2016 Western Junior champion and 2015 runner-up Erin Geddie (Esquimalt WC) at 172 pounds is eligible to return for this years competition.
The top four (4) place winners in each Junior weight class at the Western Junior (High School) Regionals will qualify for their state's National Team above the state limit at the combined Junior and Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D. in July.
