The United States Marine Corps was named title partner of the Girls Folkstyle Nationals wrestling tournament, scheduled at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Mar. 23-26.
As core values of the United States Marine Corps fall closely in line with those of the sport of wrestling, it is a natural fit for this military branch to take on the title partner position.
The US Marine Corps Girls Folkstyle Nationals welcomes girls born from September 1, 1997 through 2010 to compete, and will showcase the quickly-growing sport of girls folkstyle wrestling on a national stage.
This year, the Marines will be activating on a grand scale, with representatives from both the national headquarters and the regional office based in Oklahoma City. Maj. Gen. Paul Kennedy of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command is scheduled to attend and address the crowd during the event.
“USA Wrestling and the Women’s National program is very excited for the opportunity to partner with one of the strongest, most reliable, and historic organizations there is,” said Terry Steiner, USA Wrestling Head Women’s Freestyle Coach. “The Marine Corps brings a standard of excellence that is second to none and a standard in which we are trying to achieve within our own National Program. We are excited and honored to have them a part of our program, but also a naming partner for the largest women’s wrestling event in the country. As we move forward to Tokyo 2020 and beyond, we anticipate this partnership will grow and strengthen.”
The Girls Folkstyle Nationals tournament has continued to grow throughout the years, with last year’s 790 participants representing over 40 states.
