KIEV, Ukraine – Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) won a gold medal as five U.S. wrestlers captured medals on the first day of the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers and Coaches Memorial. The United States had seven men and four women competing on Friday.
In the championship finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Anthony defeated 2015 Junior World champion Turkan Nasirova of Azerbaijan in a 10-0 technical fall. Anthony, a two-time Junior World Champion, was also fifth at the 2013 Senior World Championships.
Anthony opened with an 8-0 decision over Katharina Baumgartner of Germany, 8-0, then stopped Ilona Semkiv of Ukraine, 6-3 in the semifinals.
“I definitely had a slow start for the day. I didn’t feel like I had my offense going in the first couple of matches. I felt really good in the finals. It was good to start feeling like myself, wrestling like myself, and getting to my scores,” said Anthony.
2016 World silver medalist Alli Ragan claimed a silver medal at 60 kg/132 lbs., falling to 2016 European U23 champion Tetyana Omelchenko of Azerbaijan in the finals, 5-2.
Ragan opened with a 10-8 win over 2016 Junior World silver medalist Anhelina Lysak of Ukraine 10-8. In the semifinals, she stopped 2016 University World silver medalist Gabriella Sleisz of Hungary, 4-1.
Winning a silver medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs was Frank Perrelli (Charlottesville, Va./Titan Mercury WC), who was defeated in the finals by 2016 European silver medalist Andre Yatsenko of Ukraine, 3-2.
Perrelli won his first three matches to reach the finals. He beat a pair of wrestlers from Belarus right off the bat, stopping Andrei Bekreneu, 6-4 and Dzimchyk Rynchynau, 5-5. In the semifinals, he dominated 2009 Junior World bronze medalist Mikhail Ivanov of Russia with a 10-0 technical fall
2016 Olympic champion Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal in her first competition since claiming the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was competing at 60 kg/132 lbs., which is up three weight classes from where she won the Olympics at 53 kg/116.5 lbs.
Maroulis won her first match over Mariia Ilchyshyn of Ukraine, 4-2. In her second match, Maroulis was defeated by Omelchenko by pin. It snapped her 64-match winning streak, the longest among U.S. wrestlers. The last time that Maroulis lost was at the 2014 World Championships in Uzbekistan in September 2014, where she fell to Japan’s Chiho Hamada, 6-2.
In her bronze medal match, Maroulis scored a 10-0 technical fall over Iryna Koliadenko of Ukraine.
Three-time NCAA champion and Freestyle National Team member Alex Dieringer won a bronze medal for the USA in men’s freestyle at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Dieringer opened with a pair of wins, stopping Rustam Rasuiev of Ukraine and Svetoslav Dimitrov of Bulgaria. In the semifinals, Dieringer lost 7-5 to Reza Afzalipaemami of Iran, a 2012 and 2016 University World champion and 2014 Asian Senior champion. Afzalipaemami went on to win the gold. Dieringer rebounded by pinning Oleksiy Scherbak of Ukraine in the bronze-medal bout.
Two Americans placed fifth after losing bronze-medal bouts, Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. in women’s freestyle and Nathan Burak (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 97 kg/213 lbs. in men’s freestyle.
"Our team performance on day one was encouraging. Specifically, in the three athletes that wrestled for medals we saw them executing skills and winning position battles. Frank Perrelli showed his offensive prowess putting up a lot of points, staying in the fight and opening up leads in hard fought matches on his way to a silver medal. Alex Dieringer continues to prove his ability winning a bronze. We have four great athletes stepping on the mat tomorrow with Green, Chamberlain, Trotman and Nelson. I'm excited to watch their performances and I think it will be a fun day," said National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
The USA will have four men and four women competing on Saturday. Included among the USA entries will be 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell and 2016 Olympian Haley Augello in women’s freestyle and 2015 World bronze medalist James Green in men’s freestyle. Their draws are listed below.
