Two U.S. wrestlers reached the championship finals of the Croatia Open, a major international Cadet Greco-Roman event held in Zagreb, Croatia on Saturday.
Claiming a gold medal at 100 kg was Cohlton Schultz of Parker, Colo., who defeated Balint Vatzi of Hungary in the championship finals, 3-0.
Schultz was on the 2016 Cadet World Team for the United States, and has qualified to compete in both the 2017 Cadet World Championships and the 2017 Junior World Championships in Greco-Roman.
“Schultz is really becoming a real Greco-Roman wrestler. He was completely dominating. This kid could be the future for the USA. I can't say enough about his personality and leadership skills. Now, adding his athletic abilities, he's something special,” said U.S. coach Lucas Steldt.
Capturing the silver medal at 54 kg was Camden Russell of Omaha, Neb., who was defeated in the championship match by Deni Nakaev of Germany, 4-1. Russell has been a UWW Cadet All-American in the past.
“Camden Russell is a Zac Dominguez prodigy. All of Zac's athletes have been great on the trip. Camden is definitely on the short list of future American Greco Roman great athletes. This kid is just awesome as a person, a natural leader and an athlete every coach wants. Camden Russell is definitely not on his last podium appearance for the USA's Greco-Roman Program,” said Steldt.
Three U.S. wrestlers reached bronze medal matches, but were defeated to place fifth, Conor Knopick of Omaha, Neb. and Raiden Johnson of Coral Springs, Fla., both who wrestled at 54 kg, and Austin Almaguer of Kennewick, Wash., who was at 58 kg.
Knopick was beaten in his bronze-medal bout by Antonio Cibaric of Croatia, 5-0, while Johnson lost by fall to Ion Dionici of Moldova. Almaguer was beaten by Samuel Bellscheidt of Germany by pin.
At 42 kg, Nathan Rubino of Omaha, Neb. placed fourth, competing in a round-robin format.
A team of 13 U.S. athletes wrestled in the Croatia Open. Complete results on each of the athletes will be posted when they become available.
“This is Developmental and we will have successes and failures. We are constantly finding more athletes that are looking for opportunities to pursue Greco Roman. Over all USA Wrestling is growing on all fronts. We now train through Thursday. On Friday. we will bus to Serbia to compete in one more competition before heading back to the States,” said Steldt.
The United States placed sixth out of 13 nations entered with 12 team points.
