Penn State takes No. 1 in TrackWrestling rankings and Wisconsin moves up to tied at No. 8

There’s turnover at the top of the Trackwrestling rankings for the first time this season.

Welcome to the No. 1 spot, Penn State.

And welcome to the Top 10, Wisconsin.

The Nittany Lions — with a little help from South Dakota State — wrestled the top ranking away from Oklahoma State, which had been the team to beat throughout the first 12 weeks of the season.

Cael Sanderson’s decision to insert true freshman Mark Hall into his lineup gave Penn State just enough of a boost to edge the Cowboys in this week’s tournament team rankings. With Hall debuting at No. 8 in the rankings at 174 pounds, the Nittany Lions pushed their projected point total up to 104, 1.5 more than No. 2 Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys handled South Dakota State on Sunday, but they got upset at three weights — 133, 174 and 197 — and those defeats cost Oklahoma State 11 points in the team standings.

Ohio State held onto the No. 3 spot with 86.5 points, followed by Iowa (80), Virginia Tech (77.5), Nebraska (59.5) and Missouri (52.5). Cornell is tied for eighth with Top 10 newcomer Wisconsin at 37.5, while Minnesota is No. 10 with 37.

Trackwrestling’s team rankings are based off the number of advancement and placement points each squad would accumulate if its wrestlers finished in those ranking slots at the NCAA Championships. Top-ranked wrestlers earn 20 points, followed by 16 for second, 13.5 for third, 12.5 for fourth, 10 for fifth, 9 for sixth, 6.5 for seventh, 5.5 for eighth, 2 for spots 9-12, 1.5 for spots 13-16 and 1 for 17-25.
