Colorado Springs Metro Championships set for Jan. 20-21 and streamed live on TrackCast

Up to 26 Colorado Springs area high schools will take part in the 17th annual Colorado Springs Metro Wrestling Championships on January 20- 21 at Doherty High School.
Pine Creek is looking to make history this year, as the first team to win four consecutive Metro Titles. A pair of 2016 Colorado State champions, senior Peter Isais (160-4A) and sophomore Garrett Niel (182-4A) will be looking to defend their Metro championship titles. Isais is ranked No. 1 in the state at 160 lbs. by On the Mat and Niel is ranked No. 1 at 170 lbs. No. 6 sophomore Ronald Salazar III (152- 4A) hopes to improve on his second-place Metro finish from the year before.
The first session of the competition will begin on Friday, January 20th at 4:30 p.m. and will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Championship Finals scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
Admission for adults is $20 for all tournament passes. Student admission is priced at $5 for all tournament passes.
Local high schools anticipated to compete in the tournament are Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs Christian, Coronado, Discovery Canyon, Doherty, Falcon, Fountain- Ft. Carson, Harrison, James Irwin, Lewis Palmer, Liberty, Manitou Springs, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Peyton, Pine Creek, Rampart, Sand Creek, Sierra, The Classical Academy, Vista Ridge, Widefield, and Woodland Park.
Seven of the 14 Metro Champions from 2016 will be returning to the mat to defend their titles. Senior Stebe Dabelko (113-5A) from Coronado and sophomore Patrick Allis (106- 4A) from Discovery Canyon both are ranked No. 2 in the state.
Other returning champions include these state ranked wrestlers: No. 3 Luke White (152- 4A) from Cheyenne Mountain, No. 4 Zach Garrard (182- 4A) from Cheyenne Mountain, and No. 10 Jared Turner (138- 4A) from Discovery Canyon.
There are over 75 state ranked individual wrestlers in this year’s tournament and five state ranked teams including No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain (4A), No. 8 Coronado (5A), No. 7 Mesa Ridge (4A), No. 9 Discovery Canyon (4A), and No. 11 Pine Creek (4A).
Awards will include individual medals for 1st through 8th place in each weight class, team awards for the top four teams, Outstanding Wrestler awards for lower and upper weights, Outstanding Underclassman, Outstanding Student Athlete of the Year (Senior), Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year and Manager of the Year.
All of the bouts from the 2017 Colorado Springs Metro Championships will be streamed live on TrackCast, which is located on TrackWrestling.com. Fans can watch live and archived footage for $9.95, which covers the entire tournament. There will be in-depth commentary provided for the semifinal and final rounds.
USA Wrestling organizes and conducts this tournament on an annual basis as a service to the Colorado Springs area wrestling community.
