OKLAHOMA CITY – Session three of the WCWA Women’s College Nationals, held at Oklahoma City University, started Saturday morning with a second-period re-wrestle of the 136-pound semifinals between Simon Fraser’s Nicole Depa and Campbellsville’s Koral Sugiyama.
The outcome of last night’s semifinals match was protested as Sugiyama was awarded an 8-8 win on criteria.
However, it was Depa who technically won criteria with a four-point move and a pair of two-pointers, outweighing Sugiyama’s four-pointer, two-pointer and two one-pointers.
The decision to re-wrestle only the second period was determined by the final takedown, which happened in the last six seconds of the match and in favor of Sugiyama. It was not challenged by Campbellsville coach Lee Miracle for a potential four points because he was told Sugiyama owned criteria, thus not seeing a reason to challenge it and potentially change the actual outcome of the match.
In the re-wrestle, which started with a 6-5 lead for the Simon Fraser sophomore, Depa scored six unanswered points to snag a spot in the 136-pound finals with a 12-5 win.
Set to face Campbellsville’s Kayla Miracle, tonight will be Depa’s second-straight appearance in the WCWA finals. Last year, she advanced to the 130-pound first-place match.
The afternoon saw blood-round action as well as placement matches.
21 different programs return home with at least one All-American.
King leads the field with nine All-Americans, followed by Simon Fraser and Campbellsville, who each have eight.
Host Oklahoma City University boasts seven All-Americans as well as Wayland Baptist, with Menlo College earning six.
In the team race, King, with 175.5 points, holds a 16.5-point lead over SFU (159 points). Each have multiple finalists with a head-to-head match at 143 pounds.
Finals are scheduled to start Saturday evening at 5 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on Flowrestling.com.
