No. 8 NC State comes from behind to defeat #25 Pitt, 23-15

RALEIGH, N.C. - Facing a 13-7 deficit halfway through the ACC dual, No. 8 NC State won four of the five matches after the intermission and defeated No. 25 Pitt Friday night in Reynolds Coliseum, 23-15. The Wolfpack (11-1, 4-0 ACC) got an overtime win at 157 pounds, followed by a DQ victory at 174, a decision at 184 and a major decision to close the win at 197 pounds over the Panthers (8-5, 0-3 ACC).


The dual started with an OT battle between top-25 foes at 285 pounds. Pitt’s Ryan Solomon came out on top of #21 Mike Kosoy, 5-2.


Redshirt-sophomore Sean Fausz evened the dual with his 10-5 win over #29 L.J. Bentley at 125 pounds. Fausz scored three first period takedowns to improve to 2-0 in ACC competition and 6-0 overall since he moved down to 125 pounds a couple of weeks ago.


After a Pitt major decision at 133 pounds, #2 junior Kevin Jack continued his dominating season with a 19-6 major decision over #31 Nick Zanetta at 141 pounds to even the score at 7-7 after four bouts. Jack recorded seven takedowns in the match and has now won 23 straight matches, and improves to a perfect 10-0 in duals and 4-0 in ACC action.


After a Pitt pin at 149 pounds, the Panthers held a 13-7 lead at the midway point.


Coming out of the intermission, #28 freshman Thomas Bullard scored a huge OT win for the Pack and defeated #33 Taleb Rahmani. After ending regulation tied 7-7, Bullard scored a takedown 22 seconds in the extra period, and now has back-to-back wins over ranked ACC foes. During the match, a team point was deducted from Pitt making the team score 12-10.


Pitt once again answered with a 5-1 decision at 165 pounds to increase its lead to 15-10.


NC State then closed with three straight wins, the first back-to-back wins for either school during the dual.


At 174 pounds, #30 freshman Nick Reenan was in dominate fashion has he built up a 23-7 lead late into the third period, when Pitt was DQed for multiple stalling calls and NC State was awarded six team points instead of the five for a technical fall and the score was even at 15-15.


#10 Redshirt-junior Michael Machiavelli followed with a 9-4 win at 184 pounds to give the Pack its first lead of the night.


#24 Redshirt-sophomore Malik McDonald closed out the win with a 10-2 major decision at 197 pounds. McDonald recorded three first-period takedowns and rode out the entire third period to secure the major with over four minutes of riding time.


Up Next: The Pack will make a quick turnaround and host West Virginia on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Reynolds for Senior Day.
