2016 Women’s University Nationals champion Erin Golston (New York AC) advanced to the finals of the 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial International at 48 kg on Friday.

In the journey to get to the finals, Golston dominated in both her quarterfinals match and semifinals match. She went up against Autumn Gordon (Lancaster WC) of Sugar Grove, Ohio, teching her in the first period of the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Golston repeated a tech over Sarah Allen (Univ. of Cumberlands) of Huber Heights, Ohio, in the second period.

Golston is firing away at today’s tournament and how she feels is having the largest effect on her success.

“I feel great. I feel like I’ve had a pretty good morning,” Golston said. “Both of my matches went pretty well. I was able to get to my attacks and my ties. I’m excited going into the finals.”

Moving forward into the finals she is pumped and ready to go.

Golston will face three-time Cadet World champion Kika Kagata of Japan in the finals. The two women met in 2015 at the Lady Klippan Open in Klippan, Sweden, where Golston fell to Kagata in a close match, 2-1.

With Golston’s performance in the tournament thus far, you can only imagine that she’s ready to face Kagata again.

And she is.

“I’m excited to wrestle her, again, tonight. She’s very technical and we match up pretty well, we can give everyone a good show,”

Golston has been one of the better U.S. women in the bracket for many years, but has unfortunately always fallen behind someone.

With dominating matches from today behind her, what has been so different in her positive experience today? The way that she’s taken the day is not how she has typically approached tournaments.

“I took [my preparation] a little differently at today’s tournament. Normally I’m in the crowd hanging out with everyone. Today I was just more to myself and I think that helped me a little bit, it allowed me to focus a bit more for my matches coming up and relaxed me as well.”

Her new approach is something that has helped her have more control in today’s tournament. Golston’s focus is really showing on the mat.

In preparation for today’s tournament Golston participated in the National Women’s Freestyle training camp, Jan. 14-21. Being able to get on the mat with a variety of different wrestlers has been good for her preparation.

“[Camp] went really, really good. A lot of people came in, I was able to have more partners. It was good,” she said.

The Dave Schultz Memorial International finals will begin at 2:30 MT and will be streamed live on Flowrestling.com.

Be sure to catch Golston in the first finals match of the afternoon at 48 kg.
