MISSOURI RELEASE by Andrew Melroe
Lavallee Records Win No. 100 as No. 4 @MizzouWrestling Goes 2-0 at South Beach Duals

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – On the first day of the inaugural South Beach Duals in Deerfield Beach, Fla., No. 4 Mizzou Wrestling (10-0, 3-0 MAC) recorded wins over Kent State (7-3, 0-2 MAC) and No. 24 North Carolina (3-4, 0-0 ACC) to remain perfect on the 2017-18 campaign. The Tigers dominated the competition for the majority of the day, recording bonus point victories in 10 of 15 victories, winning 44-3 over the Golden Flashes and 27-9 over the Tar Heels.

With two wins on the day, redshirt senior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) recorded the 100th win of his career, becoming the 27th member of Mizzou’s exclusive 100-win club.

DUAL RECAPS
After a forfeit win in the first match against Kent State, the Tigers rattled off eight straight wins in its first dual of the day, winning five of the bouts by bonus points. Four Tigers; redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.), Lavallee, redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Connor Flynn (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) and redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) recorded first period falls, while redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) recorded a technical fall. With the win, Mizzou moves to 3-0 in MAC duals, outscoring its conference foes by a combined score of 116-12.

Mizzou dropped its first bout against the No. 24-ranked Tar Heels, but then responded with seven straight wins as five Tigers recorded bonus points and five recorded wins over ranked opponents. The biggest win of the dual came from redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Grant Leeth (Kearney, Mo.), who upset No. 3-ranked Troy Heilmann, 6-3. Redshirt freshman 184-pounder Canten Marriott (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) recorded his first career win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 16-ranked Chip Ness in overtime, 3-1, with a takedown in sudden victory.

NOTABLE TIGERS
Four Tigers recorded two bonus victories on the day, led by Lavallee, who pinned Casey Sparkman at 2:25 in his first match and then defeated No. 19-ranked Kennedy Monday in his second bout. Lavallee improves to 100-27 in his career with the two victories, becoming the first Tiger to join the 100-win club since three-time NCAA All-American Lavion Mayes recorded his 100th win in Mizzou’s dual-opening victory over Old Dominion last season. The Tiger senior now has eight career technical falls, and is just one 15-point victory away from joining the career technical falls top-10 list in program history.

Lewis was punishing in both his matches, winning 18-2 over Kent State’s Dylan Barreiro and 17-2 over North Carolina’s Adis Radoncic. Lewis also now has eight career technical falls, and is one win away from joining the career technical falls top-10 list in program history.

Eierman recorded his eighth fall of the season with a pin over Kent State’s Tim Rooney at 1:28, then recorded 15-5 major decision over North Carolina’s No. 15-ranked AC Headlee, while Flynn recorded a fall over Kent State’s Isaac Baast at 1:06, then a 10-1 major decision over North Carolina’s William MacDonald.

MICHIGAN STATE RELEASE by Grace Amberg
Michigan State Dominates On Day One Of South Beach Duals

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Michigan State wrestling made a statement on the first day of competition at the South Beach Duals on Friday afternoon, held at the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex in Deerfeld Beach, Florida. The Spartans defeated both Southern Illinois, 31-8 and Franklin & Marshall, 25-12 to finish the day undefeated.

“Today’s wrestling was a good opportunity for a lot of our guys to get matches. We put completely different lineups out there for both duals, and it allows more guys to get dual meet experience and get acclimated to that type of environment,” Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler said. “Thirteen out of the 15 guys that we traveled got mat time, and we have two dual meets tomorrow, so today we had the luxury of mixing up the lineup a little bit. It’s very important for every guy to get dual meet experience at some point so that when they do step in to a big time dual meet, they’re not shell shocked.”

Nine Spartans finished the day undefeated: freshman Rayvon Foley (125), redshirt senior Javier Gasca (141), redshirt freshman Jake Tucker (157), redshirt freshman Austin Hiles (165) and redshirt junior Shwan Shadaia (184) went 2-0, while redshirt freshman Jwan Britton (149), redshirt junior Austin Eicher (149), redshirt sophomore Logan Ritchie (174) and redshirt freshman Danny Kruse (184) all went 1-0.

Eicher wrestled in his first dual match of the season and the first match at 149 of his Spartan career, dominating with a technical fall and over five minutes of riding time, 17-2.

With the 2-0 day, Foley improves to 4-0 in dual competition and earns the first major decision of his career as a Spartan. Gasca is now 3-0 in dual competition, improving to 28-11 in his career. Hiles is also undefeated this season in duals, 3-0 so far this season.

“We need to wrestle within ourselves and be grittier in some positions,” Chandler said of carrying the momentum over. “These guys know who their opponents are tomorrow and they’re just going to have to be stingy on defense and create scoring opportunities on offense.”

NORTH CAROLINA PRESS RELEASE by Bobby Hundley
No. 24 Tar Heels knock off No. 8 Minnesota at South Beach Duals

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. --- No. 24 North Carolina scored its first top-10 win under head coach Coleman Scott when the Tar Heels knocked off No. 8 Minnesota 25-16 Friday as part of the 2017 South Beach Duals. Carolina got pins from A.C. Headlee and Danny Chaid among six match wins to score the upset in the first dual of the day. No. 4 Troy Heilmann added a major decision against the Golden Gophers for the Tar Heels, who fell to No. 4 Missouri later in the afternoon by a 27-9 decision.

Headlee's third-period pin of No. 10 Tommy Thorn at 141 pounds highlighted a run of four straight victories that gave Carolina an early advantage. Headlee trailed in the match before pinning Thorn from a defensive position early in the third to swing the momentum to UNC.

After Heilmann dominated Hunter Marko at 149 with an 18-6 major, Kennedy Monday upset No. 12 Jake Short 3-2 at 157 to give the Tar Heels a 16-6 lead in the dual. Zach Sherman also scored a top-10 win for Carolina during that stretch, handling No. 8 Mitchell McKee 5-2 at 133.

Minnesota responded with consecutive wins at the next three weights to tie the dual, but Chaid's second-period pin of Bobby Steveson put the underdogs in a dominant position. Cory Daniel then secured the dual with a 3-2 decision over Rylee Streifel at heavyweight.

Chaid had the marquee win of the second dual for Carolina, stunning No. 2 Willie Miklus of Missouri. After the match was tied 1-1, Miklus was hit with a second stall warning in sudden victory to give Chaid the victory. James Szymanski and Daniel also won for the Tar Heels, who saw the Tigers run off seven straight victories, including five of the bonus-point variety.
