LAS VEGAS – Spurred by five semifinalists, No. 9 Michigan holds a five-point edge over No. 2 Ohio State at the conclusion of day one at the 36th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Past NCAA finalist Adam Coon lead the Wolverine charge at the Las Vegas Convention Center with three pins and one major decision to qualify for the 285-pound semifinals. All-Americans Stevan Micic, Myles Amine and Alec Pantaleo, plus 2016 Big Ten champion Domenic Abounader, join Coon as semifinalists for Michigan.
Not among the list of Michigan semifinalists is defending tournament champion and top-seed Logan Massa, who was upset by Wisconsin freshman Evan Wick in the 165-pound quarters, 8-4. Massa was stunned in the first period by an apparent knee injury and was unable to overcome a pair of early Wick takedowns to avoid the defeat.
A shorthanded Ohio State squad finds itself in championship contention entering day two even without the services of Olympic champion Kyle Snyder, NCAA champion Nathan Tomasello, and recent U23 World bronze medalist Joey McKenna. The Buckeyes pushed six athletes to the semifinals, the most of any school.
Buckeye NCAA champion Myles Martin picked up three bonus-point wins on his way to the 184-pound semis. He will face a red-hot Taylor Venz of Nebraska, who has posted four pins in four matches thus far.
In addition, NCAA finalist Bo Jordan, All-Americans Kollin Moore and Micah Jordan, plus Luke Pletcher and Te’shan Campbell, all navigated to tomorrow’s semi-final round for Ohio State.
Nebraska, Arizona State and Northern Iowa round out the list of top five teams following the quarterfinals.
Outside of Massa, the only other No. 1 seed to go down on Friday was returning NCAA finalist Ethan Lizak of Minnesota. Arguably the best top wrestler in the NCAA, Lizak was out-wrestled by Utah Valley freshman Taylor LaMont in the 125-pound quarterfinals, dropping a 4-3 decision.
The tournament will resume at 9 a.m. (PT) on Saturday with a highly-anticipated semi-final round and remaining consolation bouts. The first place and third place matches will follow at 3 p.m. (PT).
