CHEBOKSARY, Russia – Japan edged the United States, 4-4, in the third round of matches at the Women’s World Cup, to claim Group A on Friday and advance to the championship finals on Saturday.
The dual meet was determined by the criteria of most classification points, which Japan won 18-13. Japan scored a pin and two technical falls for key bonus points, while the USA won all four of their matches by decision.
Japan will face China for the World Cup title. China won three bouts to capture Group B, beating Azerbaijan 8-0, Ukraine 8-0 and Mongolia 5-3. The United States will compete for third place on Saturday against Mongolia, which finished 2-1 in Group B.
Japan and the USA entered the evening session dual meet with matching 2-0 records. The United States won their first two duals, stopping Russia, 4-4 on criteria, and handling Sweden, 7-1. Japan beat Russia, 5-3, and shut out Sweden, 8-0.
Japan opened with a pair of technical fall wins by past World champions, as 2017 World champion Yui Susaki stopped two-time World Team member Victoria Anthony 11-0 at 48 kg and 2016 World champion Mayu Mukaida defeated 2016 Olympian Haley Augello, 10-0 at 53 kg.
Team USA came back with two consecutive decisions to knot the match at 2-2 at the mid-point. Showing some slick takedown techniques at 55 kg, 2016 World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt took an early 4-1 lead and went on to win 6-3 over Momoka Kadoya.
At 58 kg, Kayla Miracle continued the USA momentum with a 4-2 win over Akie Hanai. Miracle scored both of her takedowns in the first period, and showed strong defense in the second period to take the match.
Japan came through with two big wins in the middle weights to clinch the victory. At 60 kg, Yukako Kawai of Japan, who was eighth in the 2017 World Championships, defeated two-time World silver medalist Alli Ragan, 8-1. Ragan led 1-0 at the break, but a Kawai takedown followed by three ankle laces gave her the eight points needed for victory.
At 63 kg, Yurika Ito, who boasts University World and Junior World gold medals but has not made a Japanese Senior World Team, was able to take down 2017 World Team member Mallory Velte and turn her for a first-period pin in 1:36. The classification points at that time favored Japan 18-7, which meant that the USA could win the final two bouts by pin and still Japan would win the dual meet on criteria.
The USA closed out the dual with a pair of shutout decisions. 2017 World Team member Tamyra Mensah-Stock was in control throughout for a 5-0 win over Miwa Morikawa at 69 kg. In a highly anticipated match at 75 kg, three-time World champion Adeline Gray scored all three takedowns of the match to defeat six-time age-group World champion Masako Furuichi, 6-0.
“It was a good day but not a great day. The things we wanted to see today were some grit, toughness and persistence with our offense. We saw it at times, but not consistently. In order to win consistently at this level, we need to be tough in all situations. We can do a better job of refocusing after things don’t go our way. I am proud of how we competed but we are capable of more,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
In the morning session, the victory by the USA over Russia featured a late comeback. The USA had early wins from Victoria Anthony (48 kg) and Sarah Hildebrandt (55 kg), but Russia led 4-2 going into the final two bouts. Tamyra Mensah-Stock, a 2017 World Team member, was in control for a 9-1 win over past Junior World champion Anastasia Bratchikova to close it to 4-3 in favor of host Russia.
The final bout featured Gray against two-time World bronze medalist Alena Perepelkina at 75 kg. Russia had an edge in the tiebreaker win a technical fall win at 53 kg, while all of the three USA wins were by decision. Gray quickly came out and took down Perepelkina and pressed her for the pin. The USA won the tie-breaker with the most classification points in the dual meet, 17-16, based upon Gray’s clutch fall.
Against Sweden, the USA won the first seven matches in a dominant effort. Haley Augello scored a pin at 53 kg, technical falls went to Victoria Anthony (48 kg) and Tamyra Mensah (69 kg) and Alli Ragan received a forfeit at 60 kg. Sweden won the final bout, giving the USA a commanding 7-1 win.
Three USA athletes went undefeated on Friday, Hildebrandt and Mensah with 3-0 records, plus Gray with a 2-0 record.
The other team medal matches will include Ukraine against Russia for fifth place and Azerbaijan against Sweden for seventh place on Saturday.
The USA vs. Mongolia third place dual meet will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday local time, which is 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time.
“Tomorrow, we face a tough Mongolia team. We are going to have to get refocused and show our mettle and character. There are some women feeling pretty bad right now, so we will have to let it go to be able to bounce back against Mongolia. They are going to come out swinging and we need to make sure we match the intensity and the energy the match will require,” said Steiner.
