Olympic and World champion Kyle Snyder, shown at the Beat the Streets Benefit in Times Square, goes into the 2017 World Championships in Paris ranked No. 1 in the world.

2016 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) retained his No. 1 World ranking in men’s freestyle at 96 kg/213 lbs. from United World Wrestling for August, in the final ranking prior to the 2017 World Wrestling Championships in Paris, France, August 21-26.

Seven of the eight members of the 2017 U.S. Senior World Freestyle Team appear in the August rankings, including five who are in the top five spots in their weight class.

The USA comes off a fantastic performance at the Grand Prix of Spain in mid-July, where seven members of the U.S. World Team won gold medals, with the other World Team member not competing due to recovery from an injury. It was a strong effort heading into the World Championships for Team USA.

Snyder won a gold medal at the Grand Prix of Spain. He retains the No. 1 ranking in the class, as the 2016 Olympic champion at 86 kg, Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia, has moved up to 96 kg and is ranked No. 2 behind Snyder.

A pair of U.S. World Team members are at No. 3 in the August rankings, 2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 61 kg/134 lbs. and 2015 World bronze medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC/Nebraska RTC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. Both won gold medals at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Also high in the rankings are 2012 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska RTC), who is No. 4 at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox (Columbia, Mo./Titan Mercury WC/Missouri WF) at 86 kg/189 lbs. Burroughs was a champion at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Cox did not compete in the tournament. Cox moves up one spot from July’s rankings.

Two other 2017 U.S. World Team members moved into the Top 20 for the first time this year, No. 16 Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack WC) at 125 kg/275 lbs. and No. 19 Thomas Gilman (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. Both won Spanish Grand Prix golds and will be competing on their first U.S. Senior World Teams in Paris.

The highest ranked U.S. wrestler not competing at the Worlds in Paris is No. 6 David Taylor (State College, Pa./Titan Mercury WC/Nittany Lion WC) at 86 kg/189 lbs. Taylor has wins over numerous international stars this season, including the new No. 1 ranked athlete at his weight, Iran’s Olympic champion Hassan Yazdani Charati of Iran. Also ranked again in August is No. 14 Dom Bradley (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids WC) at 125 kg/275 lbs. Both Taylor and Bradley were runners-up at the U.S. World Team Trials in June.

Overall, the USA has nine ranked men’s freestyle wrestlers in August, the same number as last month. Two U.S. wrestlers dropped out of the rankings, Tyler Graff at 57 kg and Alex Dieringer at 74 kg.
