Davis qualifies for bronze medal match on first day of Greco-Roman at Cadet Worlds

TBILISI, Georgia – The U.S. Greco-Roman team pushed one wrestler into a medal match during the first session of action at the 2016 Cadet World Championships held at New Sports Palace on Tuesday.
American Jack Davis qualified for the 58 kg/127.75 lbs. bronze medal match after posting a 2-1 record on the morning.
Davis opened with a 7-7 criteria decision over 2016 Nordic champion Anton Rosen of Sweden, followed by a first period fall over Poland’s Aleksander Mielewczyk to advance to the semifinals. He was downed by 2016 Cadet Asian champion Mohammad Mokhtari of Iran, 10-2, to fall into the bronze medal match.
“He needs to score on his feet. He needs to stay off the mat in the par terre position,” U.S. coach Shawn Sheldon said of Davis heading into tonight’s session. “We’re going to talk to him a little bit about motion on the bottom and how to stop getting lifted, but he’s just got to wrestle. Great kid. He’s the future.”
Davis, a USAW Cadet Nationals All-American in Greco-Roman, is set to face 2016 Cadet Asian bronze medalist Erbol Bakirov of Kyrgyzstan for the bronze medal tonight.
It was a difficult morning for the remaining U.S. Greco-Roman athletes that competed on day one in Georgia. All four U.S. participants dropped early round matches and were not pulled into the repechage rounds.
Wrestling at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., promising talent Peyton Omania looked strong in a 2-1 round one victory over 2016 Cadet Asian bronze medalist Saurabh Saurabh of India. Omania was stopped in his next bout by Japan’s Ryoma Anraku, 9-4.
“You’ve got to score to win your matches. Once you’re down it’s like, oh man, you’ve got short time, so you better get after it. I was only down 5-4, got extended, and like Cohlton, I got arm thrown. I mean, come back next year for a Junior World title. Just work twice as hard,” said Omania.
Americans Malik Johnson, Real Woods and Cohlton Schultz all fell in the first round of their respective brackets.
“It’s a tough tournament. This is the first World Championships for most of them, and it’s another level. Everybody fought hard. Nobody gave up,” added Sheldon.
The Greco-Roman medal matches at 50 kg, 54 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg and 100 kg will be wrestled at 11:30 a.m. (ET) today.
