Kyra Barry, Team Leader for the USA Olympic Women’s Wrestling Team, came by the Columbia campus to talk about her summer with the team in Rio de Janeiro.
Kyra returns from Rio as part of a team which made history, with Helen Maroulis becoming the first US woman wrestler ever to win Olympic gold.
Kyra talks us through her rise to the top of women’s wrestling in the United States, including her role in Beat The Streets, where wrestlers compete in New York’s Times Square to raise money for youth wrestling in New York City.
And she lifts the lid on life inside the Olympic Village - including why after a few days in Rio all she wanted was a Big Mac.

Women’s Team Leader
Kyra Tirana Barry of New York, N.Y., has served as the Team Leader for women’s wrestling during the 2013-2016 quadrennium, serving in this role for three World Championships and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
During the three years as Team Leader, the USA has won nine World medals, including two gold medals by Adeline Gray and a gold by Helen Maroulis. In the team standings, the USA placed third at the 2013, 2014 and 2015 World Championships. At the 2016 Olympic Games, she also led the team which featured the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, Helen Maroulis. She has worked closely with National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner and his staff.
She was named 2015 Woman of the Year by USA Wrestling, a prestigious award which recognizes an outstanding woman for her contributions to the sport of wrestling.
She was instrumental in the creation of Women’s Wrestling Week, which USA Wrestling has celebrated the last two years. She also helped lead USA Wrestling’s first public celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 2016.
She serves as President of Beat the Streets in New York City, an organization that aims to improve the lives and potential of New York City student-athletes through the benefits and skills acquired by participating in amateur wrestling.
She helped organize USA Wrestling’s involvement in UWW’s Super 8 women’s campaign in 2015, in which World champion Helen Maroulis was an international ambassador.
Barry has helped set up meetings with the Women’s Sports Foundation to find common ground between the organization and the wrestling community.
Barry also has set up committees to work on a variety of issues to help build and expand high school and college wrestling for women.
