LOS ANGELES (March 23, 2015) –The star-studded Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup arrives in Los Angeles for the third consecutive year. Featuring wrestling’s top competitors, the highly-anticipated 2016 World Cup will take place on June 11-12 in front of a packed house at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. This year’s tournament is expected to be another thrilling spectacle that will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
This is the last chance for fans to see these world-class athletes in action one more time before the Summer Olympics. Attendees can purchase tickets for the popular international competition through Ticketmaster.
“It’s exciting to welcome the World Cup back to the Los Angeles area,” said Andy Barth, chairman, 2016 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup Organizing Committee. “We’re thrilled to host the world’s best in front of The Forum’s fans for a true, Olympic send-off.”
The Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup is among the sport’s most important annual international competitions, pitting the world’s top eight men’s freestyle wrestling teams against one another. This year, the World Cup will serve as the teams’ final meet before this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"The 2016 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup is another opportunity for LA to showcase its commitment to athletics and its unique ability to support high level competition,” said Eric Garcetti, Mayor, city of Los Angeles. “We look forward to welcoming these great athletes before they head off to Rio.”
The host United States of America will be one of the eight teams in this year’s field. They’ll be competing against (alphabetically): Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Iran, Mongolia, Russia and Turkey. Iran took home the team championship at the 2015 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup, while the U.S. finished second and Azerbaijan placed third.
Numerous World and Olympic champions from the past are expected on eight team rosters at this year’s World Cup.The American team is expected to feature members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team, which will be determined at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10.
“Hosting the Freestyle World Cup again gives us a perfect opportunity to showcase the talented athletes of Team USA,” said Rich Bender, executive director, USA Wrestling. “This is a unique chance for fans to see our sport on this impressive stage.”
The World Cup field will be split into two pools of four nations, with each team competing against the other three teams in its pool. The winning teams of each pool will compete for first place; second place in each pool will compete for third place; third place in each pool will compete for fifth place and fourth place in each pool will compete for seventh place.

The local organizing committee benefits from the talent and membership of USA Wrestling, Beat the Streets Los Angeles, California USA Wrestling, the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club and other premiere Los Angeles-based sports organizations.
The Freestyle World Cup was developed in 1973 in the United States, which has hosted the event 28 times since its inception – more times than any other nation.

Sunday, June 12
Session II – Round 3 of Pools, 5th& 7th Place Matches (11a.m.-2:30p.m.)
Session III – 3rd Place Match, followed by 1st Place Match (5p.m.-7:30p.m.)
General admission for both the Saturday and Sunday sessions are just $60 total or $35 for individual days. Preferred seating options are available for $85 for both Saturday and Sunday, or $55 individually.
