Renowned author and wrestling historian Jamie Moffatt won the 2016 NCAA Championships journalist picks contest, hosted annually by TheMat.com. Moffatt scored 36 points by correctly selecting seven champions and a contest-high seven second place finishers.
Four journalists finished in second place with 35 points, just one behind Moffatt: Dan Fickel (Wrestling USA Magazine), Ron Good (Amateur Wrestling News), Andrew Hipps (InterMat), and Christian Pyles (Flowrestling) tied for second place, each totaling 35 points.
Hipps led all journalists with eight correct champion picks.
Participants received three points for every champion, two points for every runner-up and one point for a finalist in the wrong placement. The top five teams were used as a tiebreaker. Participants received points for each correct placement (5-4-3-2-1).
Scoring the most points in the team race predictions were Mike Finn (WIN Magazine), Josephine Gartrell (Men of Scarlett and Gray/AWN) and Richard Immel (USA Wrestling) all correctly selected the top three teams for 12 points. The team race was used as a tiebreaker only.
A record 38 journalists this year submitted their predictions. Those on the USA Wrestling media list as well as the accreditation list for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials were offered an opportunity to give their selections.
