Forrest Molinari of King scores a pin over Alana Quackenbush of Wayland Baptist, one of nine King wrestlers to reach the semifinals at the WCWA Nationals.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – King University and Oklahoma City University entered the evening session of the WCWA Women’s College Nationals Friday night in a tie.
After winning nine of its 11 quarterfinal matches, King jumped to a strong 23.5 point lead over the host OCU and has good momentum in its attempt to win a third straight national team title.
Top seeded Ashley Illif (101) and Hanna Grisewood (123) were among the Tornado stars to advance. Of the nine athletes remaining for King, the team has a pair of semifinalists at three weight classes, 101, 109 and 116.
Other King wrestlers in the semifinals are Marina Doi (101), Daisy Santos (109), Breonnah Neal (109), Samantha Klingel (116), Hanna Jewell (136), Forrest Molinari (155), and Jackie Williams (191).
“We are wrestling really well, but I feel we have at least two people who should definitely be in the semis, and didn’t wrestle too well in their matches. We will have to make up for that tomorrow, as they fight to get third. We have nine in the semis. We wrestled pretty well. It’s a long tournament and OCU is fighting hard. We are going to focus on each individual having the best performance that they can,” said King head coach Jason Moorman.
Oklahoma City had a solid quarterfinals as well, winning six of nine matches. Included were two big wins where OCU athletes knocked off No. 2 seeds in their weights. At 123, Cassidy Jasperson defeated No. 2 Montana Drum of Missouri Baptist, 8-4. Another big win came at 143, as Maggie Douma stopped No. 2 Olivia Seppinni of McKendree, 5-4.
All four of the returning champions advanced to the semifinals, junior Cody Pfau of Oklahoma City at 109, sophomore Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville at 136, senior Victoria Francis of Lindenwood at 170 and junior Tiara Scott of Campbellsville at 191.
Pfau, who had three pins for the day, will face Arielle Hernandez of McKendree in her semifinal bout.
“I really know our team needs points, and I am a pinner. I work pin holds. That is what I am strongest at. Pin to win. That is what it’s about,” said Pfau.
Francis, a past Junior World bronze medalist, beat talented freshman Kendall Reusing of Simon Fraser, 12-7 in the quarterfinals and will battle Nadine Fiege of Life in the semifinals.
“I feel pretty good. I have definitely been working my offense, which is the goal for this season. I have gotten in good shots today and feel pretty solid," said Francis.
It was a great day for No. 1 seeds, as all 10 will compete in Saturday’s semifinals. Other top seeds still in the draw include freshman Becka Leathers of Oklahoma City at 123, junior Natalia Hinojo of Oklahoma City at 130, sophomore Mallory Velte of Simon Fraser at 143 and freshman Jessika Rottier of the University of the Cumberlands at 155.
Velte, a member of the 2015 U.S. Junior World Team, is among six Simon Fraser semifinalists.
“I am wrestling better, although I started off a little slow. It is kind of hard. I am coming off the Senior circuit, where I went to Schultz, the Open, and the New York Athletic Club and I was getting kind of beaten down. It is nice to have some success here,” said Velte.
Campbellsville, last year’s runner-up, is tied in third with Simon Fraser with 103.5 points, with Lindenwood in fifth at 85.5 points.
The WCWA also announced its scholar awards for teams and individuals this year, with seven teams recognized and 25 individuals honored. These outstanding programs and student-athletes are listed below.
