ITHACA, N.Y. – Oklahoma State made a rare trip to upstate New York and Nolan Boyd gave Gabe Dean a rare loss.
Dean entered Sunday with a 52-match win streak, but struggled during a 9-point second period against Boyd, who eventually won, 14-9. It highlighted fourth-ranked Oklahoma State’s 32-12 win over No. 14 Cornell at Newman Arena. Sunday marked the Cowboys’ first appearance in Ithaca since 1965.
“That’s a big win for Nolan (Boyd),” said OSU head coach John Smith, whose squad improved to 10-2 this season. “That’s the type of effort he needed to kind of get over the hump. He’s been able to put together some nice wins this year and I suspect he’ll be ranked higher than 16th next time out.”
Boyd, a junior 184-pounder, knocked off then-No. 4 Willie Micklus of Missouri two weekends ago and trailed 4-2 after one period against the 2015 NCAA champion. But a Boyd escape preceded a low-level attack that seemed to rattle Dean the rest of the way. A 4-point near fall and a 2-point near fall pushed Boyd to an 11-5 lead after five minutes and he withstood a small rally late for the 5-point victory.
“I’ve been saying for a while that anybody inside the top 10 or 15 can beat anybody,” Boyd said. “(Dean) is tough, but I felt like somebody was going to beat him. I never really look at rankings, try to stay from that stuff, but I feel like I can go with anybody at the weight.
“When I got that (second-period) takedown, got to his ankle, I felt him kind of give up on the position. I felt something different about him, but I also felt that I was right in the match. It’s a confidence boost for me, but there is still a long ways to go in the season and I feel like I can still get stronger.”
The Big Red (4-5) tried to mount a small comeback trailing 22-8 after Alex Dieringer’s first-period pin at 165 pounds. All-American Brian Realbuto (26-3) was too much for Chandler Rogers at 174, riding for 4:24 in a 13-2 major decision at 174 pounds. OSU starter Kyle Crutchmer was injured in Friday’s win over Oklahoma in Stillwater.
At 22-12, CU could have put some scoreboard pressure on the visitors with another win at 184. Boyd (21-6) knew the scenario and sealed the team win.
“Some good and some bad, but I liked how we came into this environment and competed against a good team,” Smith said. “Things didn’t always go our way, but I liked that we scrapped out some wins and had some really good performances. (Anthony) Collica coming out the way he did; Dean (Heil) had another solid match. And Nolan (Boyd), the dual was still in question, and he came out and put it away against someone wrestling at home and that won a national championship last year.
“It was tough trip to travel on Saturday, get up and come down here to wrestle them on their Senior Day in front of a good crowd. It can only help us down the road.”
Cornell forfeited at 125 pounds, but quickly got back in the dual with senior Nahshon Garrett’s 17-1 technical fall at 133 pounds. The top-ranked Garrett, a senior from California, moved to 26-0 this season and 138-12 for his career.
OSU sophomore Dean Heil (21-0), ranked No. 1, had a workmanlike 9-1 major decision of Mark Grey at 141 and Anthony Collica (19-6) made quick work of rookie Joey Galasso, hooking up a cradle at the 2:44 mark at 149 pounds.
The best match of the day came at 157 pounds where OSU’s talented rookie Joe Smith faced off with Dylan Palacio, out most of the early schedule for Cornell. A takedown with :06 left in the first period gave Palacio (8-1) a 2-0 lead and, after giving up a takedown, quickly reversed to lead 5-2 early in the second frame. Another takedown and riding time gave the Big Red junior an 8-4 win over Smith, who fell to 27-3.
Dieringer (21-0) made quick work of Duke Pickett, scoring a fall at the 1:18 mark. It was Dieringer’s 70th straight victory.
Following Boyd’s win at 184, Preston Weigel (13-8) rode out the third period in a 2-0 win over Owen Scott at 197. Austin Marsden (20-2) finished the dual with a 16-3 major decision at 285 pounds.
