Big matches last night: Oregon State beats Stanford and Wartburg beats Augsburg

Here are two big college matches you might have missed last night.


OSU Beavers topple No. 20 Stanford 21-13

Palo Alto, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Abraham Rodriguez ended an 8-match losing streak with a pivotal technical fall to lead the Oregon State wrestling team to a 21-13 victory over No. 20 Stanford on Thursday in a Pacific-12 Conference match at Burnham Pavilion.


Rodriguez dominated Walker Dempsey 26-11 to give the Beavers (7-6, 1-1 Pac-12) a 12-7 lead at the halfway point. The Cardinal (9-3, 2-2) won the next two matches to go back ahead 13-12, but their advantage was short-lived.


Redshirt freshman Corey Griego (184), redshirt sophomore Cody Crawford (197) and redshirt sophomore Amarveer Dhesi (hwt.) the combined for three straight wins by decision for nine unanswered points to clinch the match.


The Beavers thus captured their second match in a row while snapping Stanford’s nine-match winning streak. They also extended their winning streak over the Cardinal to 11 matches in a row, and upped their series edge to 39-1-1.


Also winning for the Beavers were redshirt juniors Joey Palmer (133) and Joey Delgado (149). Delgado earned a major decision and enabled OSU to tie the match 7-7 after four weight classes.


The road trip resumes at 7 p.m. Friday at Cal Poly, and concludes at 5 p.m. Saturday at CSU-Bakersfield. Both are Pac-12 matches.


OSU’s next home dual is Feb. 11 against Oklahoma. The Beavers host Air Force on Feb. 14, then conclude the regular season with the Feb. 21 Border War against Boise State, also at Gill Coliseum.

Top-ranked Wartburg Wins Annual Battle of the Burgs

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Top-ranked Wartburg (18-0 overall) defeated No. 7 Augsburg (11-3) 29-10 Thursday in the annual Battle of the Burgs. The Knights took the go-ahead lead in the all-time series at 16-15 and have won the last seven straight Battle of the Burgs.

Auggies fall 29-10 at top-ranked Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Winning seven of 10 bouts, the top-ranked Wartburg College wrestling team scored a 29-10 win over No. 7-ranked Augsburg College in the annual "Battle of the 'Burgs" dual meet on Thursday evening at Levick Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champion and No. 7-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, scored three victories, but top-ranked Wartburg won for the seventh straight time in the annual meeting between the two small-college wrestling powers, improving to 16-15 in the all-time series.

• No. 1-ranked and defending heavyweight national champion Donny Longendyke (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) claimed a 9-1, major-decision victory over Ben Nagle, improving to 26-2 in the process with his 16th straight win. Of his 26 wins, 20 are bonus-point wins (16 pins, four major decisions).

• Longendyke is now 70-4 in his Augsburg career and 110-25 in his collegiate career. Of his 110 wins, 83 are bonus-point victories (61 pins, three technical falls, 19 major decisions).

• Grant Parker (JR, Onalaska, Wis.) opened the match with a 7-6, sudden-victory overtime win over Wartburg's No. 3-ranked Drew Wagenhoffer at 157 pounds, improving to 22-9 on the season and 54-41 in his collegiate career.

• James Goman (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS) scored the biggest upset win of the evening, topping Wartburg's No. 3-ranked 125-pounder Arnulfo Olea by a 9-7 decision. Now 13-15 on the season, the match was Goman's first against a nationally-ranked wrestler this season.


FOR THE FOES

• Sebastian Larson (SO, River Falls, Wis.) nearly pulled off an upset over No. 6-ranked Bryan Levsen of Wartburg at 184 pounds, but Levsen earned a riding-time point to claim a 4-3 win over Larson.

• Rashad Kennedy (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), ranked No. 7 at 149, kept things close with Wartburg's defending national champion Kenny Martin, but Martin prevailed in a 9-7 decision to close the match. Kennedy is now 13-5 on the year.

• In the only meeting of ranked wrestlers on the evening, Wartburg's No. 3-ranked Connor Campo topped Augsburg's No. 10-ranked Sam Bennyhoff (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) 7-4. Bennyhoff fell to 19-4 on the season.

• Eric DeVos, ranked No. 3 at 174, pinned Augsburg's Austin Boniface (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) in 26 seconds.

• The Knights scored two technical-fall victories, as Nick Michael topped Augsburg's No. 10-ranked Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) 16-1 in 7:00, and No. 2-ranked 197-pounder Gerard Roman scored an 18-0 win at 1:52 over Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.).

• At 141, Wartburg's Kaz Onoo scored a 15-3, major-decision win over Aaron Wilson (FY, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS).
