Fresno City College wins 14th California CC state title

The 2016 California Community College State wrestling championships wrapped up on Saturday in Victorville, Calif., with Fresno City College winning its first team title since 2012 and 14th in program history.


Fresno City scored 158.5 points, besting the No. 2 team Cerritos College by five points.


Finals bouts at 157 and 197 pounds put Fresno City and Cerritos wrestlers head-to-head. Cerritos emerged victorious in both cases with Kevin James winning the 157-pound bracket and David Vanweems taking the crown at 197 pounds.


The lone champion for Fresno City was Julian Gaytan at 125 pounds, who took at 8-1 decision over Landon McBride of Sierra.


Four finals pitted teammates against each other.


Palomar’s Alberto Garcia and Jake Schaeffer wrestled at 133 pounds. Garcia took a 3-2 win.


Mount San Antonio College sent two to the finals at 141 pounds, where Kevin Kelly edged out Casper Sherow, 3-2.


Dylan Martinez cruised past Fresno City teammate Dean Esquibel with an 11-2 major decision at 149 pounds.


Kalan Hastey also win his finals by a major decision over Trevor Wright at 184 pounds, 13-4. Both wrestlers represented Sacramento City.


Other champs included Derek Lee Loy (165 lbs.) of Sacramento City, who was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, Alex Garcia (174 lbs.) of Cuesta and Chance Eskam (285 lbs.) of Palomar.


The tournament, hosted by East LA College and Victor Valley College, featured 20 teams.
