LAS VEGAS – A rough day saw the United States fall short of the medal round at the World Championships on Wednesday at the Orleans Arena.

All four U.S. wrestlers were eliminated during the first session on Wednesday.

Two-time World medalist Alyssa Lampe rallied from a 7-4 second-period deficit to record a dramatic fall over Vietnam’s Thi Hang Vu in her first women’s freestyle bout at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Lampe then pulled out a dramatic win over North Korea’s Hyon Gyong Kim in the second round. Lampe trailed 5-4 before Kim was penalized for passivity to tie it 5-5. Lampe won on criteria by scoring last.

China’s Hui Li then scored a quick 10-0 technical fall over Lampe in the quarterfinals. Lampe was eliminated when Li lost in the semifinals.

"I didn't wrestle the best I've ever wrestled," Lampe said, "but I definitely kept pushing the pace."

World champion Elena Pirozhkova of the U.S. opened with a quick 59-second fall over Ilania Keju of Marshall Islands in women’s freestyle at 69 kg/152 lbs.

Pirozhkova, a three-time World finalist, then fell 5-3 to past World champion Jenny Fransson of Sweden in the second round.

Pirozhkova was eliminated when Fransson failed to reach the finals after falling to Olympic gold medalist Natalia Vorobieva in the quarterfinals.

"This is probably the best I've ever felt,” Pirozhkova said. “The results don't show that but, I feel really good. I don't really cut weight for this weight class, and I know a lot of the girls do. I just felt great. I've had great training. It's just the little things that kind of got away from me throughout the match.”

American Whitney Conder opened by headlocking and pinning Senegal’s Isabelle Sambou in the first round at 53 kg/116.5 lbs.

Conder scored the opening takedown before falling 6-2 to No. 3 Xuechun Zhong of China in the second round. Zhong failed to reach the finals, eliminating Conder from the tournament.

“I didn’t give myself enough chances,” said Conder, who was competing at her third Worlds. “I made a few mistakes against China that I definitely know I need to go back and fix. I need to come back from this next year.”

American Jordan Holm dropped a 3-1 decision to Javid Hamzatau of Belarus in his first bout in Greco-Roman at 85 kg/187 lbs. Holm was eliminated when Hamzatau lost his next match.

“To say I'm disappointed is an understatement,” said Holm, who was competing at his third Worlds. “I'm very disappointed. I think I had my foot on the gas in the first period and the beginning of the second period. I guess I got out-pummeled there. I felt like I controlled the position of the match for all but 15 seconds of it, and that cost me the lead.”

Day 4 of the six-day World Championships is set for Thursday in Las Vegas. Americans Helen Maroulis, Alli Ragan, Erin Clodgo and Adeline Gray will compete in women’s freestyle with Brent Metcalf taking the mat in men’s freestyle.
