New York, N.Y – Rutgers head wrestling coach Scott Goodale admits he’s sometimes been a little selfish when it comes to dual meets.

On Sunday at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, No. 14 Rutgers improved to 9-1 on the season with a 21-13 win over No. 7 Cornell and set the stage for a productive performance at the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships in March at the same venue.

“We knew there would be a ton of matches coming in that were going to be toss-ups,” said Goodale.

The toss-ups were crucial for the Scarlet Knights as they won a pair of one-point decisions and came away with another crucial victory at 197 pounds as Hayden Hrymack upended Owen Scott 10-7 at 197 pounds.

“We were without our 157-pounder, who’s been really really good for us, he’s going to be special. Without him, we knew we needed a fall somewhere,” said Goodale.

The key bonus-point victory came at 141 pounds where returning All-American Anthony Ashnault pinned Cornell reserve Dylan Realbuto at 5:14.

“Anthony was the guy to do it – good for him. I just thought we battled from top to bottom, every position,” said Goodale.

“The biggest knock on me was as a high school coach, I love dual meets,” he said. “They’re important to me. That little stuff matters. Look at Ashnault’s match – he wanted to go on the bottom because he’s been working on the bottom, but I didn’t want to waste any time because I thought we needed the bonus points. That’s me thinking about the dual meet, not me thinking about Anthony Ashnault. Maybe I’ve got to do a better job than that. If it’s a tournament, I’ll let him do what he wants, but from a from a dual meet standpoint, we need to score points.”

Rutgers, buoyed by a large fan contingent in Madison Square Garden, started out strong with Sean McCabe earning a late takedown to knock off nationally-ranked freshman Dalton Macri 6-5 at 125 pounds.

“Sean McCabe will finally start getting some respect now,” said Goodale. “He’s beaten a bunch of ranked guys, so we just knew we’d have to win a bunch of those toss-up matches and when you do, those are the results.”

Another key toss-up win came at 149 pounds in a battle of past Pennsylvania state champions Tyson Dippery and Joey Galasso. Dippery earned an escape with 1:39 remaining in the third period to come away with a 5-4 win.

Battling in every position was also key as Rutgers 184-pounder Nick Gravina surprised returning national champion Gabe Dean with an early takedown to grab a 2-1 lead. While Dean quickly rebounded and earned a 13-5 major decision, Gravina’s loss was indicative of Rutgers’ need to save potential bonus points in matches where they were heavy underdogs.

The win over Cornell was Rutgers’ first since 1998, but it was also only the third meeting between the two former EIWA rivals since 1998. The win didn’t go unnoticed by a program that’s sold over 1,000 season tickets for its home duals just one hour south.

“It’s a passionate fan base, they want us to wrestle hard. That’s what they buy their tickets for. They’re knowledgeable and we have to put on a show for them. We know where we’re at with the sport of college wrestling,” said Goodale. “It’s great to see that fan base have that entire section filled and we’re going to need the same from them come the national tournament in March.”

While Rutgers’ win over Cornell was the signature upset from a team standpoint, Drexel’s Matt Cimato came away with the day’s biggest individual upset en route to Outstanding Wrestler honors. Cimato topped two-time All-American and 2014 NCAA champion Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern in the Dragons’ 21-20 criteria win over Northwestern. Cimato also upended nationally-ranked Kyle Langenderfer of Illinois in his second match of the day.

No. 5 Nebraska handed Cornell a 21-14 loss in the day’s second session in the only matchup at MSG between top 10 programs. The biggest individual matchup of the day didn’t live up to the billing as Dean topped returning All-American T.J. Dudley of Nebraska with an 11-3 major decision at 184 pounds. The Huskers earned key wins at 125 as Tim Lambert edged Macri 6-4 and notable bonus victories at 141 and 149.

At 141, national qualifier Anthony Abidin earned a 23-5 technical fall over Mark Grey while Jake Sueflohn, returning to the Husker lineup after a redshirt year, majored Galasso 12-4 at 149.
