Trice is Right! Jarod Trice named Outstanding Wrestler after capturing University Nationals Greco-Roman crown

AKRON, Ohio – Five years after steamrolling to University Nationals titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, Jarod Trice finally received his wish.
He was named Outstanding Wrestler of a major wrestling tournament for the first time.
Trice, 60 pounds lighter and one weight class lower, captured the University Nationals Greco-Roman title at 98 kg/216 lbs. on Friday at the University of Akron Field House.
Trice downed returning champion Orry Elor 2-2 on criteria to earn a USA Wrestling stop-sign shaped plaque on Friday.
“It’s about time – I should’ve won it in freestyle and Greco in 2010,” a smiling Trice said after the OW announcement came late Friday afternoon. “It was a good tournament for me. Orry is a tough competitor and it was good to get that victory in the finals.”
Trice, who avenged a loss to Elor from the U.S. Open earlier this month, was one of nine champions crowned in the University Greco division.
Trice dropped down to 98 kilos for the first time at the Open.
“Some of these heavyweights were just too big for me,” Trice said. “There are guys cutting down from 300 pounds and I felt like I could compete better moving down a weight class.
“I trained over in Europe for a month, in Croatia and Hungary, and I talked to my coaches and I decided to make a sacrifice and I lost 60 pounds. I actually lost the weight in 2½ months. I came here to get some matches in and I felt real good.”
Northern Michigan University, home of the U.S. Olympic Training Site, crowned four champions with Sammy Jones, Anthonie Linares, Barrett Stanghill and Parker Betts earning crowns on Friday.
Jones repeated as University champion. He edged teammate Dmitry Ryabchinskiy 2-1 in the finals at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
“It was a close match, but I was able to finish it out,” Jones said. “It feels good. I love University Nationals – it’s our time to shine. We wrestle on the Olympic level against guys who are well out of college, so it’s good to compete against other guys who are in college and show what you can do.
“It was a tough match. Dmitry and I train together every day. He knows everything I do and I know everything he does. He’s a solid wrestler. This just prepares you for the Senior level because these are guys you’re going to be seeing.”
Wrestlers also winning titles on Friday included Aaron Kalil, Sahid Kargbo, Jason Grimes and Mike Larson.
Kargbo, a past Junior World Team member, put on a show in posting a 17-9 technical fall over Elijah Sullivan at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
Past champions in this event had qualified for the University World Championships, but there will not be a University Worlds this year. The University Worlds will return to the schedule in 2016.
