Five double champions crowned during Western Junior freestyle finals

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Western Junior freestyle competition continued Thursday afternoon at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
In an event that hosted nearly 300 athletes, 15 individuals earned the title of Western Junior freestyle champion.
Of those 15, five became double champions winning the Greco-Roman competition on Wednesday in addition to the freestyle tournament today. Double champions included Ryan Chauvin at 100 pounds, Jerry Mealey at 120 pounds, Tyler Selemaea at 170 pounds, Joshua Roetman at 195 pounds and Dallas Goodpaster at 220 pounds.
Each double champion finished the freestyle competition with powerful first place matches.
Missouri native Selemaea edged Brock Smith 9-7 in the 170-pound finals.
“All of this hard work is really paying off,” said Selemaea. “It feels good. It’s fun to be on top. I know I’m the hungriest, I wanted to get a first place title before I headed out to Fargo.”
Returning Western Juniors freestyle champion Johnny O’Hearon defended his title in an exciting finals bout at 145 pounds, pinning opponent Jaron Jensen in the second period.
“I was nervous coming into the match, but I knew that I could pull it off. Really, it just took mental toughness. I was down 5-0, but then I came back. I just had to be mentally tough,” said O’Hearon.
2015 Western Junior Greco-Roman silver medalists Jason Holmes and Brock Hardy both went on to become freestyle champions.
After losing to Jordan Martinez in the Greco-Roman final on Wednesday, Holmes finished the freestyle competition strong, defeating Martinez by technical fall in the 106-pound finals.
“I was pretty tired. I just had to know that I deserved it, and knowing that you work harder than that person,” said Holmes.
Hardy won against Kanen Storr at 132 pounds, dominating his opponent with a technical fall, 11-0.
“[Storr] was really defensive on my shots. I had to work on counterattacking his,” said Hardy.
