LAS VEGAS, NEV. – A talented field of 150 wrestlers from across the United States and Canada made for an excellent showing at the 2015 Western Junior Greco-Roman Regionals.
Of the champions, Minnesota’s Jake Allar won the Outstanding Wrestler award for the 2015 competition. The 2012 Cadet World Team member and 2014 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National freestyle champion had a stellar performance throughout the day at 152 pounds, defeating Jesse Jeffries by technical fall in the first-place finals, 16-6.
“The kid was really strong. He scored six [points] right away and kind of caught me sleeping. After that, I just go to my offense and ended up scoring those 16 points,” said Allar.
As a second-year Cadet, Allar came to the tournament to test his skills against the older age group.
“I decided to wrestle up, and I’m actually wrestling up at 152 lbs too. This is the first time I’ve ever wrestled at 152 lbs. I just came here for good competition. My cousins grew up here, so I come to Vegas a lot. I’ve always liked the city and the atmosphere. This wrestling tournament, I’ve never been to this one before but it was a lot of fun,” said Allar.
Fellow Minnesota natives Mitchell McKee and Ty Johnson also went on to win championship titles on Wednesday. McKee defeated Brock Hardy in the 132 pounds finals, 6-4. Johnson followed with a finals win against Jose Acosta at 138 pounds, 12-10.
“It’s great having us Minnesota guys come down to Vegas and get those wins, get those auto-qualifiers. It’s good to come down here and dominate,” said Johnson.
Returning Western Junior Greco-Roman Regionals champion David Goodpaster won his second title, defeating Brad Feagans by tech fall in the 220 lbs final.
“It feels great, just coming down here and putting in hard work throughout the season. It just feels good,” said Goodpaster.
Chase Wickman, another returning champion, was defeated in the finals by Clai Quintanilla at 126 lbs. Quintanilla was recently a double champion in freestyle and Greco-Roman at the 2015 Cadet Northwest Regionals in Battle Ground, Wash., March 27-29.
Returning runner-up wrestlers from the 2014 competition Joshua Cortez at 145 lbs, and C.J. McKinnis at 170 lbs were beaten in the finals again.
Cortez was defeated in the finals by Quentin Hovis, 10-16. Hovis was a silver medalist at the 2014 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Greco-Roman National Championships in Fargo, N.D., as well as a bronze medalist in the 2013 Greco-Roman competition.
Tyler Selemaea went on to defeat McKinnis in the 170 lbs final, 6-0.
