HERSHEY, Pa. -- All the fans who complain about college wrestling being boring these days, full of low-scoring defensive matches, should have watched Augsburg this weekend at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
The Auggies scored bonus points in 16 of their matches, and the 24 points they scored in those propelled them to a record 12th team national title. Augsburg finished with 100 points, ending Wartburg’s four-year run of championships. The Knights scored 89.5 for runner-up honors at Giant Center.
“We like to go out there with the fire,” said Augsburg senior Mike Fuenffinger, who won his second consecutive individual title at 125 pounds and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. “It was great. All of the guys did awesome.”
Augsburg recorded seven pins, seven major decisions and two technical falls. In the 19 wins that weren’t by fall, the Auggies outscored their opponents 178-41.
“We assumed (the difference) was going to be bonus points,” head coach Jim Moulsoff said. “We knew that coming in, so every opportunity we had to get bonus points, we had to get it, we had to get it. And they went after it. They attacked, and it was exciting.”
Fuenffinger did all but clinch the team title with his 15-2 win against Messiah’s Lucas Malmberg in a repeat of last year’s championship.
“I was sticking to the plan, attacking and going forward,” Fuenffinger said.
Fuenffinger’s victory meant Wartburg would have to win both of its finals with bonus points, and the Knights couldn’t pull that off.
Ironically, the Auggies capped the tournament with their lowest-scoring victory of the two-day event. Heavyweight Donny Longendyke used a second-period escape to defeat Rhode Island College’s Terrance Jean-Jacques 1-0.
“I expected it to be a tight match,” Longendyke, a transfer from Nebraska said. “I tried to control the pace of the match, a lot of hand fighting. That was my goal to win it like that.”
Wartburg split its championship matches.
Kenny Martin recorded thee takedowns in an 8-3 win against Delaware Valley’s Vinny Fava at 149. Two of the takedowns came in the first period as he built a 4-1 lead.
“It was real big, setting the pace for the match is always a big thing,” Martin said. “I know it gets in the other guy’s head, so I feel it has a big effect on the match.”
Martin’s win came right after his former Clackamas Community College teammate C.J. Palmer beat Luther’s Drew Van Anrooy 4-2 in the second sudden-victory period in the 141 final.
Palmer, from Hunter College, almost won in the first tiebreaker when Van Anrooy was penalized one point for his third false start with 9 seconds left. But Van Anrooy scrambled free on the edge of the mat with 2 seconds left to tie the match at 2-2.
Palmer finished off a long scramble for the winning points with 3 seconds left in the second sudden victory.
“What I can remember -- it is all scrambled in my mind -- I slapped and I think I had an outside single,” Palmer said. “Then he funked right away and he had my leg. We were close and we scrambled all the way outside the line, and I knew I had to keep pressure on his head just to open it up. I had him on his back so I thought the referee was going to call it. It was a real scramble and I knew I was going to get it.”
Palmer, from Dingmanns Ferry, was one of three Pennsylvania natives to win in his home state.
Wilkes’ Matthew Grossmann, a freshman from Lancaster, was the first. He beat Augsburg’s Chad Bartschenfeld 4-3 at 133 pounds.
“I finished last season here in high school and came back to win a national title here (in the same arena),” he said.
The key was a takedown that broke a 2-2 tie.
“I got the ankle pick and we were kind of scrambling and I ended up getting the takedown, and I just knew I needed to keep him down so I didn’t give up any easy points,” he said.
The third Pennsylania champion was Washington & Jefferson’s Nick Carr, who also won a state title in Giant Center for South Fayette in 2010.
“It was definitely meaningful because I’ve been here three other times in high school, and I was here last week and had a chance to watch my younger brother win a state title as well. The next weekend I win a national title, so it was kind of cool.
Carr’s 6-2 win over Wabash’s Reece Lefever at 157 pounds denied the Lefever family winning three titles on the night.
Conner Lefever, Reece’s twin brother, defeated Zach Zotollo of The College of New Jersey 5-4 at 174 pounds, and sophomore Riley Lefever won a second consecutive title at 184 with a 5-3 win against Wartburg’s Devin Peterson. Both brothers won with late takedowns.
“It was that knee pull to the left leg,“ Conner said of his winning score with 29 seconds left. “I knew I could get it because I got it before in the match.
“Once I was in, I had to finish it. There were 20 seconds left and I was hit with stalling. At the end of practices we work on riding out the last 30 seconds. I knew I had that stall call, but I knew I just had to ride him out.”
Riley Lefever fell behind 3-1 when Peterson recorded a takedown with 52 seconds remaining. But Lefever escaped seconds later and scored on a low single with 36 seconds left for the winning points.
“There was a goal to win three, but two is not bad,” Riley Lefever said. “It was awesome wresting in the finals with them.”
By winning two of their three finals, the Lefever brothers vaulted Wabash into third place in the final standings, the school’s highest finish.
Cortland’s Joe Giaramita nabbed the crown at 197, beating Shane Seifert of Wisconsin-Whitewater 6-4 on a takedown in overtime.
“My coaches just kept telling me to push throughout the match,” Giaramita said. “,I just had to believe in myself and pull out the win.
Coe’s Farai Sewera won the other title. He never trailed after scoring the opening takedown and beat Tyler Schneider of Wisconsin-La Crosse 9-4 for the crown at 165.
”My coach just wanted me to go out there and push forward and get the first takedown because that’s the biggest thing of the match,” he said. “I don’t really know what happened, but I just went out there and got my 2-0 run and tried to make things happen.”
