Universities to play key role in Boston’s 2024 Olympic bid; global events hosted on global stage at local facilities
Seven Olympic and Paralympic events will take place at existing venues at Boston College, Harvard and Northeastern
BOSTON, June 24, 2015 – Iconic venues at Boston College, Harvard University, and Northeastern University will host a total of seven Olympic and Paralympic events if Boston becomes the host city for the 2024 Games, Boston 2024 Partnership CEO Rich Davey announced today.
All seven Olympic and Paralympic events announced today will take place at existing venues at the three universities: Northeastern’s Matthews Arena, Boston College’s Conte Forum, and Harvard Stadium.
“Our vision for the Olympic and Paralympic Games includes key partnerships with Boston's world-class colleges and universities to help deliver a plan that is fiscally responsible and sustainable,” said Davey. “We look forward to working closely with each college and university to ensure our plans fully align with the future they envision for their institutions.”
“Boston’s world-class colleges and universities are playing an integral role in presenting a bid that showcases Boston’s advantages on a global stage,” said Gloria Larson, President of Bentley University and Co-Chair of the Boston 2024 College and University Engagement Committee. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to engage the 250,000-strong student community in shaping the Games and, through the ideals of the Olympics, inspire this next generation of leaders. It would be an honor to host the world’s greatest sporting event – the Olympic and Paralympic Games – in these iconic university venues and add to their fantastic legacies."
Boston 2024 is engaged in conversations with other institutions, including BU and MIT, on hosting events that are compatible with their missions and can provide an optimal experience for athletes and spectators.
Details on the Olympic and Paralympic venues at the three universities are below.
Boston College: Olympic wrestling; Olympic and Paralympic judo
Boston College’s Conte Forum will host Olympic wrestling and Olympic and Paralympic judo. Opened in 1988, Conte Forum is the home of the BC Eagles’ men’s and women’s basketball and hockey teams and has hosted some of the most thrilling collegiate sporting events in the area.
“USA Wrestling would be very excited to partner with Boston 2024 and the U.S. Olympic Committee to host the 2024 Olympic wrestling competition at Conte Forum at Boston College,” said Rich Bender, Executive Director of USA Wrestling. “This should be an excellent venue to host Olympic wrestling, and we can anticipate a complete sellout there if we are able to secure the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Boston.”
“We have high expectations for our sport in 2024 and Boston's sporting landmark, Conte Forum, is the perfect fit for the action USA Judo will prepare to bring to the city and keep making Olympic history,” said Jose Rodriguez, CEO of USA Judo.
Harvard University: Olympic and Paralympic archery
Harvard Stadium in Allston, the nation’s oldest stadium and the world’s first massive reinforced concrete structure, will host Olympic and Paralympic archery. The stadium, built in 1903, has a capacity of 30,323. It is horseshoe-shaped and includes architectural elements of a Greek stadium and Roman circus.
"We're very excited about the prospect of shooting the Olympic and Paralympic archery events at Harvard Stadium,” said Denise Parker, CEO of USA Archery. “The nation's oldest stadium is a fitting home for archery, a modern sport with ancient roots. With archery's popularity growing every day, we're excited to see this Boston 2024 venue filled to capacity.”
Northeastern University: Olympic and Paralympic weightlifting
Northeastern’s Matthews Arena, the oldest multi-purpose athletic building and indoor hockey arena still in use in the world, will host Olympic and Paralympic weightlifting. Formerly known as Boston Arena, Matthews Arena is located on the east end of Northeastern’s campus. Founded in 1910, the facility is the original home of the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, and the Beanpot Tournament. Hockey programs from Northeastern, Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Boston University, Tufts University, and Wentworth Institute of Technology can all trace their roots back to the arena. Today it is the home of the Northeastern Huskies men’s and women’s ice hockey teams and men’s basketball team.
“USA Weightlifting is excited that Matthews Arena is the proposed venue for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Michael Massik, CEO of USA Weightlifting. “It is the ideal venue for our sport as it meets all the necessary requirements and is within close proximity of the athlete’s village.”

About the Venue Selection Process
To host Olympic and Paralympic events, all venues must meet a comprehensive set of criteria, including meeting the technical requirements outlined by each sport’s National Governing Body and International Federation.
Following extensive collaboration with colleges and universities, community groups, elected officials and other key stakeholders, Boston 2024 is developing the next phase of its Games Concept, which includes venue plans that reflect significant input from throughout the city and state. This is a natural evolution in a multi-step, multi-year bid process that culminates in the selection in the summer of 2017 of the 2024 host city by members of the International Olympic Committee.
