MADISON, Wis. – Jordan Burroughs is heading to Las Vegas.
And he’s eager to cash in by hitting the jackpot again with another World freestyle title.
The Olympic gold medalist and two-time World champion swept a strong opponent in Kyle Dake to win the U.S. World Team Trials on Sunday night at the Alliant Energy Center.
Burroughs won a tough first bout 6-3 before storming out quickly in the second bout en route to a 14-4 technical fall over the four-time NCAA champion and 2013 Trials runner-up.
Burroughs now takes aim at his third World gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. He made his fourth World Team. Burroughs won a bronze medal at the 2014 Worlds after being injured in his first match.
“I train to beat everyone in the World,” Burroughs said. “I’m trying to dominate. I’m extremely blessed to be able to do what I do. I wrestled hard. Kyle Dake’s a tough wrestler, and he showed he’s still a force. But I’m still here. We’re going to Vegas.”
Champions at the Trials advance to September’s World Championships in Las Vegas.
Junior World champion Kyle Snyder limited Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner to one point in 12 total minutes to make his first Senior World Team at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Snyder, just 19 years old, swept Varner 4-1 and 3-0 to punch his ticket to Vegas. Snyder beat Varner 2-1 in the U.S. Open finals to earn a spot in the finals at the Trials.
“I have amazing training partners at the Ohio RTC in J.D. Bergman and Tervel Dlagnev – they prepare me every day for matches like this,” Snyder said. “The match I lost (in the NCAA finals) hurt a lot, but I consider myself a hard worker and I stuck with the process. I love the sport and I had a lot of support in getting to this point.”
Brent Metcalf made his fourth World Team by controlling two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver in a two-match sweep in the finals at 65 kg/143 lbs.
Metcalf won 9-4 and 7-0 over Oliver. Metcalf beat Oliver in the finals of this event last year and again at last month’s U.S. Open.
“I’m trying to figure out ways to open up and build my lead,” Metcalf said. “I have a whole lot of experience and I’ve beaten some of the best guys in the World. It’s time to produce some results this year.”
Reece Humphrey made his third World Team by sweeping Daniel Dennis in the finals at 61 kg/134 lbs.
“I’ve learned a lot from my experiences at Worlds,” Humphrey said. “I decided to drop back down a weight and I felt real good out there. I’m ready for another opportunity at the Worlds.”
