Bravo-Young repeats; 3 others still alive for Triple Crowns after finals of Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals

FARGO, N.D. – Three Cadet wrestlers have moved within one step of earning a coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown.
Colorado’s Mosha Schwartz, Oregon’s Travis Wittlake and Indiana’s Andrew Davison captured Cadet Greco-Roman championships on Monday afternoon at the Fargo Dome.
Those wrestlers also won USAW Cadet Folkstyle Nationals titles in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa. They will now look to complete the Triple Crown by adding Cadet Nationals titles later this week in Fargo.
Schwartz rolled to a 13-2 technical fall over Idaho’s Derek Ramos in the finals at 88 pounds.
“This feels great. I am going to try to get my championship in freestyle and get the Triple Crown,” Schwartz said. “This is really different than other tournaments. This is the one I wanted to win. Two weeks out, I practiced three times a day and it showed here.”
Wittlake struck for four quick points with a takedown and a gut wrench en route to a decisive 6-0 win over New Jersey’s Ryan Karoly in the 160-pound finals.
Wittlake is a first-year Cadet who was a four-time Kids Triple Crown winner, including two at the Schoolboy level.
“I started wrestling when I was 4 years old and I’ve been wrestling ever since,” Wittlake said. “I love the sport and I can’t get enough of it. I love the challenge.”
Davison came out strong en route to a 5-3 win over Pennsylvania’s Anthony Walters in the 182-pound finals.
“I would love it so much to win a Triple Crown,” Davison said. “A lot of hard goes into this and I’m really enjoying it.”
Returning Cadet Greco champion Roman Bravo-Young of Arizona rallied before holding off a tough opponent in Minnesota’s Peyton Robb 8-6 in the finals at 113 pounds.
Bravo-Young won Cadet Greco and freestyle titles last year in Fargo.
Cadet World Team freestyle member Malik Heinselman of Colorado powered to a 10-0 technical fall over Jake Koelzer of Kansas in the Cadet Greco title bout at 94 pounds.
Colorado crowned a third champion when Cohlton Schultz surged to an 11-0 technical fall over Kayne Hutchison of Kansas in the 220 finals.
Illinois rolled to the Cadet Greco team title with Kansas finishing second and Colorado taking third.
Jacob Warner won an all-Illinois battle by notching a quick 11-0 technical fall over Jack Jessen in the 170 finals. Jessen won Cadet Folkstyle Nationals this year.
“I put in a lot of hard work in to get to my goal,” Warner said “It feels great to be a part of team Illinois. It’s a dynasty.”
Peter Ogunsanya of Illinois earned an 8-1 win over Wisconsin’s Benji Peak in the finals at 100 pounds.
New Jersey’s Nick Raimo took charge early in downing Wisconsin’s Alston Nutter 10-0 in the championship match at 120 pounds.
Raimo’s New Jersey teammate, Andrew Merola, started fast in a 6-5 win over Minnesota’s Mason Hall in the title bout at 138.
Missouri’s Malik Johnson held off Washington’s Riley Gurr in the finals at 106 pounds.
Minnesota’s Alexander Lloyd earned a hard-fought 5-4 win over 2014 Schoolboy Triple Crown winner Brock Hardy in the finals at 132.
California’s Patrick Martinez rallied from a 3-1 deficit by using strong defense to gain a 7-3 win over Missouri’s Kyran Hagan 7-3 in the 126 finals.
“I just wanted to stick to my game plan and I did that,” Ramirez said. “It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve been working so hard for it.”
Florida’s Anthony Artalona pulled out a wild 13-10 victory over California’s Peyton Omanta in the 145 finals.
“This took a lot of preparation – I pushed myself to get to the next level,” Artalona said. “The competition at USA Wrestling tournaments has helped a lot. There are some really great competitors here.”
Max Wohlabaugh made it back-to-back champions for Florida by scoring late in the match to top Andrew Johnson of Kansas 5-3 in the 152 finals.
Nicholas Boykin became the first Tennessee wrestler to win a Cadet Nationals Greco title after he defeated California’s Gavin Nye by a 16-6 technical fall in the 285 finals.
Maryland’s Brady Daniel continues to progress and proved that in an 8-4 win over Missouri’s Jake Boyd in the 195 finals.
