UPDATE: Metcalf wins silver medal at Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia - Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/NYAC/Hawkeye WC) won a silver medal at 65 kg/143 lbs. on Saturday at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix, considered one of the toughest tournaments in the world each year.
Metcalf, a three-time U.S. World Team member, powered through the brackets with four straight wins to qualify for the championship finals, where he was edged by 2013 European bronze medalist Ilyas Bekbulatov of Russia, 6-8.
It was Metcalf’s second career Ivan Yarygin silver medal, to go with his second-place finish in 2013, when he also was defeated by Bekbulatov in the gold-medal finals.
Metcalf opened with a 3-1 win over Ghadjimurad Abakarov of Russia, then stopped Viktor Stepanov of Russia by technical fall, 10-0. In the quarterfinals, he stopped eventual bronze medalist Zaurbek Sidakov of Russia, 9-1. His semifinal victory was an impressive 13-2 technical fall over 2014 Yarygin silver medalist Alibetgadzi Emeev of Russia, 13-2.
“Brent wrestled a great tournament all the way through finishing with the silver medal. He was very effective offensively and continues to improve where he needs. Of course, he wants the gold however, he is very close to being where he wants to be," said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
He became the second U.S. silver medalist at the Yarygin this year, joining Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC), who won a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. on Friday.
He was attempting to become the 11th American men’s freestyle wrestler to win this event, considered one of the toughest in the world each year. The last American men’s freestyler to win was Steve Mocco, the heavyweight champion in 2009. Five U.S. women have won this event, but Team USA did not have any women entries this year.
Two other U.S. athletes competed at 65 kg/143 lbs. on Saturday, led by 2014 U.S. World Team member Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich. /NYAC/Cliff Keen WC), who reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated. Kennedy moved up a weight class this year, after competing at the World Championships at 61 kg/134 lbs.
"All three of our guys at 65 kg wrestled well today for our U.S. Team. I can see the improvement in each of their performances which is encouraging. I know these guys have very high expectations and are neither satisfied nor discouraged. Each have solid evaluations based on their performances here at the Yarygin and will continue improving moving forward,” said Zadick.
Kennedy, the past All-American from Illinois, opened with a pair of wins, stopping Victor Sereda of Belarus, 5-4 then stopped Rustam Beslatcev of Russia, 7-2. In the quarterfinals, he fell to Evgeni Jherbaev of Russia, 3-8. When Jherbaev lost in the semifinals, Kennedy was not eligible for repechage.
Also competing on Saturday at 65 kg/143 lbs. was 2013 Cadet World champion and 2014 Junior World silver medalist Aaron Pico (Whittier, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), who fell to Akhmed Chakayev of Russia, 8-14. Chakayev was a Yarygin silver medalist in 2009 and a Yarygin bronze medalist in 2014.
"Jimmy and Aaron did some great things in their matches, respectively. The differences at this level are like the splitting of hairs and both guys are are on the right trajectory of improvement. This type of depth in a weight class is exciting to see, as a coach, and maybe even more so for wrestling fans. It will be a great one to watch for everyone,” said Zadick.
Two U.S. wrestlers will compete on Sunday at 86 kg/189 lbs., 2012 Olympian and 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert (Ann Arbor, Mich. (NYAC/Cliff Keen WC) and Phillip Keddy (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC). They are in the same quarterbracket at the bottom of the draw.
Herbert opens with Aslan Kakhidze of Kazakhstan, who was fifth in 2014 World Championships. Keddy drew Shinja Matsumoto of Japan, who was eighth in 2011 World Championships.
