GUELPH, Ontario, Canada – The United States won six medals, including two gold medals, at the Guelph International Open on Saturday.

Two-time U.S. World Team member Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) was the champion at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. Conder went 4-0 for the day, winning three by technical fall, including an 11-0 win over Amber Mashke of Canada in the finals.

“I felt alright. I felt I started a little slow, but I felt I got better throughout the day. I had to push myself to do better and to try things. I tried to get better at my front headlock and to finish my shots. The Schultz tournament is next for me, working at WCAP, and working on things trying to get better,” said Conder.

2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) captured the gold at 58 kg/130 lbs. She won all three of her bouts, with an 8-3 win over Canadian Indira Moores in the finals. Including was a big 8-1 win in the semifinals over World bronze medalist Justine Bouchard of Canada.

“My goals today were to execute the things I have been working on in practice. Obviously, you always want to win, but I think it was important to me to execute the things I have put the hours of time into improving. I felt pretty good. I have been competing a lot. I am building momentum and am feeling confident. I don’t feel like I’ve put it all together but I feel I am on track. Next for me is the Dave Schultz Memorial International, then more tours after that,” said Campbell.

Winning a silver medal was Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Clodgo dominated her first three matches, with two technical falls and a pin. In the finals, she was edged by Canadian World Team member Braxton Stone, 7-9.

The USA added three bronze medals from Erin Golston (Lake of the Hills, Ill./New York AC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 75 kg/165 lbs.

“It was a great chance to get back into competition mode. We have a lot of areas we need to go back and work on. I saw some good things today, but we were not consistent in what we were doing. We have to be more consistent in our efforts. We also have some areas off the mat that we need to be more disciplined with, weight control, pre-match rituals and body language, to name a few. To capture gold, you must have gold-medal process,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

Additional results information will be posted when received.

The U.S. Women’s National Team begins its January training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Monday, January 19.
