15th annual Colorado Springs Metro Championships, Jan. 23-24

Up to 27 Colorado Springs area high schools will take part in the 15th annual Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group 2015 Metro Wrestling Championships on January 23-23 at Doherty High School.
Expectations will be high for the men of Pine Creek, who won their fifth team title at the 2014 COS Metro Championships. Two of their returning athletes, sophomore Jordan Martinez (113-5A) and senior Taylor White (285-5A) will be looking to defend their Metro championship titles in the upcoming tournament.
The first session of the competition will begin on Friday, January 23 at 4:30 p.m. and will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. The Championship Finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
Admission for adults is $15 for all day passes and $20 for all tournament passes. Student admission is priced at $7 for both all day and all tournament passes.
Local high schools anticipated to compete in the tournament are: Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs Christian, Coronado, Deaf and Blind School, Discovery Canyon, Doherty, Falcon, Fountain Fort Carson, Harrison, Lewis Palmer, Liberty, Manitou Springs, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Peyton, Pine Creek, Rampart, Sand Creek, Sierra, The Classical Academy, Vista Ridge, Wasson, Widefield and Woodland Park.
Five of the 14 Metro Champions from 2014 will be returning to the mat to defend their titles, including Martinez, who is ranked at No. 3 in the state, and junior Sam Turner from Discovery Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the state at 132 in 4A.
Other returning champions, with their On the Mat rankings, include No. 1 Jess Hankin (5A-132) from Coronado, No. 3 White (5A-285) from Pine Creek, and No. 5 Joey Neumann (4A-145) from Lewis Palmer.
A handful of COS Metro runners-up are expected to return as well, including No. 5 Anthony Salazar (5A-132) from Pine Creek, No. 4 Samuel Freeman (4A-138) from Mesa Ridge, No. 2 Ben Self (4A-195) from Air Academy, No. 7 Bryan Zerr (4A-138) from Cheyenne Mountain, No. 8 Zac Baker (4A-152) from Cheyenne Mountain, and No. 3 Jimmy Weaver (5A-170) from Coronado.
There are over 70 state ranked individual wrestlers in this year’s tournament. State ranked teams include No. 4 Pine Creek (5A), No. 6 Air Academy (4A), No. 7 Coronado (5A) and No. 8 Discovery Canyon (4A), according to the most recent On the Mat rankings.
Individual medals will be given to 1st through 8th place winners in each weight class. The top four teams will also receive team awards. An Outstanding Wrestler for lower and upper weight classes will be named, as well as an Outstanding Upperclassman and Outstanding Student Athlete of the Year (Senior). There will also be an award for Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as Manager of the Year.
The event finals and semi-finals will be streamed live on TheMat.com (www.themat.com) as well as USA Wrestling’s YouTube channel.
USA Wrestling organizes and conducts this tournament on an annual basis as a service to the Colorado Springs area wrestling community.
