Verkleeren, Steveson go for gold, D’Emilio, Fix for bronze at UWW Cadet Worlds

Jarod Verkleeren and Gable Steveson get their arms raised after big semifinal wins at the UWW Cadet World Championships. Both go for gold in the finals round.


SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzogovina – The United States put four men’s freestyle wrestlers in medal matches, including two into the gold-medal finals, on the final day at the UWW Cadet World Championships on Sunday. Team USA went an impressive 13-4 in the morning session.


Going for gold medals will be Jarod Verkleeren of Pennsylvania at 63 kg /138.75 lbs. and Gable Steveson of Minnesota at 100 kg/220 lbs.


Going for bronze medals will be Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio at 46 kg/101.5 lbs. and Daton Fix of Oklahoma at 54 kg/119 lbs.

Verkleeren opened with dominance, scoring a pair of 10-0 technical falls over Vasili Diaconu of Moldova and Tobias Portman of Switzerland. In the semifinals, he had a wild match with Ahmed Medizhadehmarzn of Iran. With a 5-5 tie late in the match, and the Iranian having the tiebreaker, Verkleeren scored a four point takedown with 10 seconds left for a huge 9-5 win.


Verkleeren will face Khayrula Nuradinov of Russia in the gold-medal finals.


Steveson had a strong opener, a 10-0 technical fall over Georgios Georgiadis of Greece. He won a tough second round match over Alimagomed Alikhmayev of Azerbaijan, getting the criterion in a 5-5 decision. In his next two matches, Steveson poured on the offense in the second period for big wins. In the quarterfinals, he got the technical fall over Zuriko Urtashvili of Georgia, 13-2. In the semifinals, he stopped Soslan Khichagov of Russia, 10-5.


Steveson will battle 2015 Asian Cadet bronze medalist Khasanboy Rakhimov of Uzbekistan in the gold-medal finals.


D’Emilio powered through a tough bracket, starting with a 10-0 technical fall over Horst Lehr of Germany, then edging Semion Terzi of Ukraine, 4-3. In the quarterfinals, he was trailing late when he scored a takedown and three ankle lace turns to beat Yerbolat Rakhmadov of Kazakhstan, 10-5. In the semifinals, Russia’s Aleksei Kopylov had a strong offense and scored a 10-0 technical fall over D’Emilio.


D’Emilo will face 2015 Asian Cadet champion Amir Parasteh of Iran in his bronze-medal bout.


Fix opened with a 7-1 technical fall over 2015 European Cadet champion Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia, then hammered Vano Godelashvili of Georgia in a 12-0 technical fall. In his quarterfinal bout, Fix was leading in a 2-2 tie against Abasgadzhi Magomedov of Russia, but was penalized for passivity and lost the match 2-3.


Magomedov reached the finals, pulling Fix back into repechage, where he dominated Nicolai Grahmez of Moldova in a 10-0 technical fall. Fix will battle Abbos Rakhmonov of Uzbekistan in his bronze-medal bout. Rakhmonov has won a gold medal and a silver medal the last two years at the Asian Cadet Championships.


At 76 kg/167.5 lbs, Joseph Grello of New Jersey lost two close matches and was eliminated, losing to a Bulgarian opponent by two points and a Belaurussian opponent by one point.


Team USA is looking to add to their medal haul, after getting a gold from Yianni Diakomihalis of New York at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. and a bronze from Owen Webster of Minnesota at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. on Saturday. The USA was tied for fourth going into Sunday’s action, but the strong results today will put them in great position to win a team trophy in the top three.
