Washington, D.C.—Today, USA Wrestling boasts a new, innovative partnership with “It’s On Us,” a national campaign aimed at fundamentally shifting the way we think about campus sexual assault. The new partnership with USA Wrestling will be launched at the 2015 Freestyle Wrestling World Cup, held at the Forum in Los Angeles, Calif., April 11-12.
As part of the campaign’s effort to create safe environments on and off college campuses, USA Wrestling will encourage its community to take the “It’s On Us” pledge, and publicize the campaign at all levels of the sport. In addition, two of the greatest wrestlers in the world from Team USA have agreed to serve as USA Wrestling spokespersons for the campaign: 2012 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs and two-time World champion Adeline Gray.
“Adding partners like USA Wrestling is integral as the campaign works to expand conversations around bystander intervention to as many people as possible,” said “It’s On Us” campaign manager Kristin Avery. “We are thrilled to welcome USA Wrestling and their unique audience to the campaign, especially during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.”
USA Wrestling is one of the first National Governing Bodies within the Olympic family to partner with the campaign. Other current partners in the Olympic family include USA Bobsled and Skeleton, USA Squash, USA Swimming, and USA Water Polo. The U.S. Olympic Committee is also an “It’s On Us” partner.
“USA Wrestling is excited to support the important work of ‘It’s On Us’ and educate the wrestling community about how to get involved. We will use our events, media platforms, athletes and coaches and other resources to get the word out, encourage people to take the pledge, and help stop sexual assault,” said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender.
The launch of the USA Wrestling partnership also coincides with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The “It’s On Us” campaign will also host a national Week of Action April 12-19. During the Week of Action, “It’s On Us” will work with its partner organizations and student organizers to host local events and activities across the country. The first Week of Action in November engaged over 9,000 students through 261 events in 39 states.
The campaign will continue to expand conversations with students across the country and work with local organizers to host events on college campuses. USA Wrestling will work to expose its entire membership to the campaign, which spans from the youth ages, through college and on to the Olympic levels.
“It’s On Us” is a project managed by Generation Progress and launched in partnership with the White House, Mekanism, and PVBLIC Foundation. Current partners include Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference, Microsoft, iHeart Media, EA Sports, the United States Olympic Committee, BET, CMT, MTV, VH-1 and Spike.
